Follow the hand the furnace the straight face Might have to do with Shadrack, Meshack, and Obindigo in the Bible. How their faith is strong and how we should be strong. Follow the Hand as in gods hand and they did this and got thrown into the furnace and kept a straight face and through their faith God saved them.

My interpretation of "The Hand the Furnace The Straight Face" term is that of one disguising pain. Like a man with his hand in the furnace holding a straight face, not showing the horrible pain he's in. Also just of how simplistic it would be to remove one's hand from the fire. A big theme in this album seems to be leading oneself into destruction (Doomsday Stomp e.g.) I don't believe this is any different in the sense we're holding our own hand in the pain of this world while there's a simple solution, just remove the hand.

As for the song: Tough Stuff. I think the words have different meanings, and some lines refer to other songs. All I've figure out is "Rest" seems to refer to the song "The Hand, The Furnace, The Straight Face" which is all about finding peace and rest, so it seems as if you remove your hand from the furnace Rest will follow.

Also ( adding to the term of disguising the pain) one thing that just came to me is that the devil is all-knowing like God is. The devil can only see what you show him, so if you disguise the pain with praise then he will feel powerless to you.

well i didnt get this song at all until i read ominousats comment...i guess all i have to say is that i wish that they would actually mention God it really makes me doubt the meaning cuz they dont...and about the simplistic solution of just removing your hand from the fire...in my opinion you cant do that without Gods help its a process of surrender repent and change its not as simple as you make it out to be

in this song, he says "never to late to recreate...". I noticed that he also says this in "the hand, the furnace the straight face", ("never to late to recreate so heres your evidence"). as before mentioned by ominousoat. has anyone tried to put the songs together to get a meaning? God bless u all.

Simple. This song follows "The Hand, The Furnace, The Straight Face", yes? In that song he is deprived of sleep because something's bothering him

Yes, Shadrack, Meshack, and Obindigo... sort of. "With the Hand in the Furnace, i shall keep a straight face". Being that thru persecution you don't back down, you remain steadfast even thou ur hands in the fire.

...And the Rest Will Follow 2 fold meaning You set and example Andddd you will recieve "Rest"

If ominousoat is right about each verse refering to another song, then "And" probably refers to Doomsday Stomp.

MetaphoricBullet , that double meaning on "Rest" makes so much sense.

In the P86 vodcast they say that "the hand, the furnace, the straight face" means being in a trial and keeping a straight face, i.e., not evincing the pain of the trial in your countenance.

It's such a vital concept to anyone going through a trial. I think the most important and hopeful line for anyone going through a trial in this song is "never too late to recreate". It goes back to the previous track, "The Hand, The Furnace, The Straight Face", where it says

You can take My worst mistakes And use them for excuses Or you can try...

This lets you realize that even after all the ways you've managed to hork things, you can always renew. This it totally applicable to anyone's life. And I think P86 doesn't mention God explicitly in their music because they want to be accessible to a non-religious audience. I don't think that means God doesn't come into the equation so much as it means P86 is great at referring to godly things in a tactful or implicit way that won't alienate someone who's stigmatized against spiritual stuff.

@ominousoat:

And whenever you remove your hand from the furnace and quit hiding your pain ...the rest will follow. Peace.
