Well, I think I'd like to give a shot on this one ^^

I think, as blatently stated at the end of the song, it's about man wanting everything, and changing everything to accomidate to their selfish needs, therefor fucking everything up completely. It's also about how people are blinded by that greed, so they lose sight of what is initially the purpose of life.

"Under the skin, the heart is pumping" - this could mean that although, you put on such a superior facade....you're only still human and you can't do everything.

I have to agree witgh ya on the whole man wanting everything, but maybe he is taking it back biblically. At the start of the song he mentions

'Below the earth lies a serpent Fire and brimstone..."

As if saying that just like the apple on the tree, we need to try the forbidden fruits of life and we need everything, until the change happens and its to much for us to handle, E.G. getting kicked out eden. If you understand what im trying to say.

Maybe not, maybe he is just talking shit, but those first few lines are what makethe song a little bit more mteaphorical.

the first stanza seems to be referring to how religions force images of eternal death (Below the earth lies a serpent Fire and brimstone") onto to people to scare("remove the backbone") them into believing("wake up, you're baptized")

the second stanza seems to be saying "this is all we are, flesh"

I think the verse starting with "under the skin..." is saying "you're scared, is that why you believe in something higher." and it talks about how they believe that our flesh forms are nothing and they focus on something made up (religion) instead of what's right in front of us.

when he says everything, I think he's referring to our undying will to not end. how man caves to the idea of immortality, in any form.

"the temple is me, something to believe in, is something to be" that part to me means that he doesnt need a religion to live by and that he can be fine without god or whatever.

"below the Earth, lies a serpent", under every seemingly good thing there is evil in some form or another, in this case i think its humankind nate is talking about. "fire and brimstone", just continueing on the belo the Earth thingy. "remove the backbone, say hello to sunshine, wake up your baptized", Nate is saying, I THINK, that at the core of every man there is a bloodthirsty animal, and is not quite as civil as man appears.

I think this song is about mankind's reckless pursuit to find meaning in life and in some be more than we reasonably could be. In this search for purpose most people turn to religion. This also satisfies the need to be outstanding because death is no longer the end and personally I don't think you get more epic than being immortal,(see the Highlander-dude kicked ass).

I think what Nate is getting at in the lines "the temple is me..." is that we can find purpose in ourselves instead of focusing on external sources.

The purpose of the first verse seems to suggest, like others have mentioned, the fear that religion has instilled in us. I especially like the lines "remove the backbone" (common symbol of cowardice) "say hello to sunshine" (parody of enlightenment)

Then once we are baptized the "evidence is all we taste". This serves to show how unwillingly most people take criticism of their religious beliefs.

"focus on the fiction, lose sight of the mission" either shows how our desire for purpose has led us to be blind followers and our destined to be great attitude is lost, totally defeating our purpose. I also liked the apple idea that someone else posted as a way of showing that we have always desired to do more than what we as humans are capable of.
