Today's on fire
The sky is bleeding above me, and I am blistered
I walk these lines of blasphemy, every day
And still

Like a bad star, I'm falling faster down to her
She's the only one who knows, what it is to burn

I feel diseased
Is there no sympathy, from the sun
The sky's still fire
But I am safe in here, from the world outside

So tell me
What's the price to pay for glory

Like a bad star, I'm falling faster down to her
She's the only one who knows, what it is to burn

Today is fine, and she burns
Today is fine, and she burns
She burns

Like a bad star, I'm falling faster down to her
She's the only one who knows, what it is to burn

Nate said many many years ago when they were on AOL Sessions, that this song is about being in hell & finding his muse.

    My Interpretation

    Well, I finally did it!

I've been coming here for years searching for the meanings to the songs that make up the sound track of my life. But it wasn't until 6 years (God I feel old) after hearing this song for the first time that it popped back into my head. Entering a new chapter, or burnt disk if you will, in my life I saw many parallels between my life currently and this masterpiece. If you've read any of the comments before mine you'll see how the song is pretty straight forward in what it means. But this is what it means to me. The only song that knows what it is to burn...

Today is on fire. The sky is bleeding above me, and I am blistered. (the hardships of life and love are burning away my soul)

I walk these lines of blasphemy everyday, and still... (I'm a girl in love with a girl and am reminded everyday that it's "wrong")

Like a bad star, I'm falling faster down to her. (Being told that God hates me I feel like I have to fall from grace. So I make my way to my lover...)

She's the only one who knows what it is to burn. (...because she seems to be all I have now. The only one that understands how it feels for life to burn you in this way.)

I feel diseased. (I feel like my oppressors could be right and that the love I feel is really some sort of illness)

Is there no sympathy from the sun? (Thinking that the word "sun" could be a pun for "son" makes the interpretation that of loosing the faith I once had since it feels like Jesus isn't going to save me from this)

The sky is still fire, but I am safe in here from the world outside. (The world still torments me, but now I've found refuge in the arms of the one I love. Where in those arms, nothing can hurt me)

So tell me, what's the price to pay for glory? (What exactly do I have to do to be happy with my soul mate and have others approve of me being gay?)

Today is fire, and she burns. Today is fire, and she burns... (My lover burns for me because she knows what I'm going through and can feel the pain I feel.. But even though we're burning today, there's always hope for tomorrow. And this "fire" in our lives will only add to the fire inside we have for each other.)

what is it to burn is finch's most basic song because they started out as a deftones rip off band. they are by far the best band on the drive thru label and that comment about them not selling more than 10000 copies is bullshit cause they are getting bigger now that they are filming a video

The new cd is entitled "What It Is To Burn", but I've heard rumors saying this actual song won't be on it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Bron-Y-Aur Stomp
Led Zeppelin
This is about bronies. They communicate by stomping.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
