the first stanza seems to be referring to how religions force images of eternal death
(Below the earth lies a serpent
Fire and brimstone")
onto to people to scare("remove the backbone") them into believing("wake up, you're baptized")
the second stanza seems to be saying "this is all we are, flesh"
I think the verse starting with "under the skin..." is saying "you're scared, is that why you believe in something higher." and it talks about how they believe that our flesh forms are nothing and they focus on something made up (religion) instead of what's right in front of us.
when he says everything, I think he's referring to our undying will to not end. how man caves to the idea of immortality, in any form.
