Blame me for the elevator I know you will
It's not me who's the operator but you're going down
You'll be sorry when you're singing all alone

But don't take me up
I'll just fall down once again
Don't take me up
I'll just fall down

Wake me when you're educated I know you will
You'll be self-medicated you're spinning round
You'll be there, but no one will even know your name

But don't take me up
I'll just fall down once again
Don't take me up
I'll only find my way back down
Don't take me up
I'll only find my way back down
Don't take me up

It's true I've dabbled at times with confident lines
I was half of a man nearly half of the time
In an innocent way, I thought it could stay with us both on the ground
With us fooling around
Let's just stay on the ground
Let's stay fooling around on the ground

Don't take me up
I'll just fall down like I knew that I would.
Don't take me up
I'll only find my way back down
Don't take me up
I'll just fall down

First of all I believe this song is about different levels of commitment in a relationship, and that, obviously, is symbilized by the elevator. Overall, I think the speaker is apprehensive about going to the next level, or being brought up to the next floor, because he will hurt whoever he's with by ending the relationship and letting the elevator fall. The lines "Wake me... your name" are kinda hazy to me, but I think he's referring to what she'll experience after it falls. And the part that gives me the greatest idea of what he's talking about is the part from "In an innocent way" to "around on the ground", because he says he wishes he could stay on the ground, on the lowest level, "fooling around", just carelessly accepting the relationship with levity. But that's just my interpretation...

I love this song, it's great!

Well, my idea is that there's a girl who's died, and is going to hell, but she tries to tell her old boyfriend that she's sorry, but he doesn't control whether she goes up or down, but she's goin to hell in the end.

I thought of it as not wanting to love because he is afraid of the pain of falling in love. And the falling out of love. He equates love with pain, and therefore trys to avoid it by keeping his relationships purely phsyical. Perhaps he even is being tempted by a specific, irresistable person.

I like rachaelrach's thought on the song.. if you take it from a more drug sense it makes a lot of sense.

the singer is obviously talking about having the girl as a "friend with benefits", but the girl wants their relationship to go higher while he doesn't want things going any further, "don't take me up, i'll just fall down".

the bridge makes things even clearer. "It's true I've dabbled at times with confident lines", saying that he's spit his game and whatnot; wanting only to stay on the "ground" just to "fool around"

In an odd way it reminds me of the book A Clockwork Orange.

    Made a few corrections :)

Blame me for the elevator, I know you will, oh yeah you will It's not me who's the operator but you're going down, down, down You'll be sorry when you're singing all alone

But don't take me up (Don't you know) I'll just fall down once again Don't take me up (Don't you know) I'll just fall down

Wake me when you're educated - I know you will, oh yeah you will You'll be self-medicated - you're spinning round, and round, and round You'll be there, but no one will even know your name

But don't take me up (Don't you know) I'll just fall down once again Don't take me up (Don't you know) I'll only find my way back down Don't take me up

It's true I've dabbled at times with confident lines I was half of a man nearly half of the time In an innocent way, I thought it could stay with us both on the ground With us fooling around Let's just stay on the ground Let's stay fooling around on the ground

Don't take me up (Don't you know) I'll just fall down like I knew that I would. Don't take me up (Don't you know) I'll only find my way back down Don't take me up I'll just fall down I'll just fall down I'll just fall down

Also, I can sort of see this song as being about sex, and then fooling the girl into believing that she is wanted, only for the guy (the singer) to let her down coz shes messed her around.

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
