Roses Are Free Lyrics

Take a piece of tinsel and put it on the tree
Cut a slab of melon and pretend that you still love me
Carve out a pumpkin and rely on your destiny
Get in your car and cruise the land of the brave and free

But don't forget to understand exactly what you put on the tree
Don't believe the florist when he tells you that the roses are free
Take a wrinkled raisin, and do with it what you will
Push it into third if you know you're gonna climb a hill
Eat plenty of lasagna 'til you know that you've had your fill
Resist all the urges that make you wanna go out and kill

But don't forget to understand exactly what you put on the tree
Don't believe the florist when he tells you that the roses are free

Throw that pumpkin at the tree
Unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny
Cast it off into the sea
Bake that pie and eat it with me
Throw that pumpkin at the tree
Unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny
Cast it off into the sea
Bake that pie and eat it with me

It's really odd that no one has commented yet! Maybe not their best song, but i still love it even with only the live version to listen to!.

At first the lyrics just seem sort of random, and maybe thats it. Seems sort of like he's talking to some girl, giving her little pieces of advice and telling her to live her life and whatever.

Do the RHCP remind anyone else of phish?

yes. this ween song is good but other ween songs are good-er. try ween. you'll like it. i like that phish likes ween. cause i like what i want to like about things so go like somthing! what i dont like is when people only like phish, or jam bands. as if this type of crowd or music is a utopia. i know...i was that way for a while....but then i rememberd that i grew up on jimi hendix, metallica, alabama, beach boys, elvis, otis redding, ac/dc, gnr(guns and roses) beastie boys and whatever else. but i still love the comradery of a good jam band concert at red rocks and the festivle atmosphere of the lot scene. makes me want kind veggie burritos just talking about it.

This song to me is incredible and no wonder Phish covers it. Easy to get vocabulary and complicated metaphors sound like they're straight out of a Phish songbook- IMO. But WEEN owns this song of course, and nevermind who does it better: my Opinion: There is a hint of American Alchemy here when he says "Get in your car and cruise the land of the brave and free" aka figure out what the hell you want to do with your life. AND "Carve out a pumpkin and rely on your destiny" and later he says "Throw that pumpkin at the tree, Unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny" which IMO suggests that you find yourself doing something you love after cruising the land of the brave and free, and 10 years later you dont love it anymore and your mindset changes, throw the fucking pumpkin at the tree and start over. But also dont fuck it up.."Take a piece of tinsel and put it on the tree" but "But don't forget to understand exactly what you put on the tree". Basically live your life with meaning, and continue to do so. Dont let it wear out. see "NEMO" by Umphreys McGee. I think I can relate the two song meanings by very different bands.. MAD PROPS TO WEEN

My Opinion

This song is one of the very first songs I ever downloaded, when I was fourteen. I was looking for another Phish song to prove to people that I was into the same kind of music as them, and wound up with the live version of this song. It's been with me ever since.

As a sort of philosopher-in-training, these lyrics rock.

Good song, but Phish covers it. It's by Ween.
