Battle Against Time Lyrics
... I'm sailing away to undiscovered seas ...
I see a golden light shining far away
I can't tell if I'll make it there someday
I reach my hands but there's no one on my path
I can't sleep 'cause my body is burning
Cold sweat, cannot breath, I'm losing my mind
Reflection in the mirror shows a different man at night
And as hours and seconds pass by
I feel my every feeling wither and die
Do I really feel this pain
'cause sometimes I can't tell if I'm awake
Watching to the night, the hope is gone
Carrying so much burden in my heart
Watching to the night with tired eyes
Waiting for nothing all my life
Battle against time
I... battle against time
I am covered with cold ice, I am flying in the black skies
Fighting everyday, but it feels like, it's just the same
Oh time... you cut my heart and soul
you carve my will and passion of life
'cause the days of emptiness are piercing through me like arrows
I feel nothing, but hate and love
So much fire inside, so much left undone

... I'm sailing away and nothing will ever be the same ...
I can't tell if I'll make it there someday
I reach my hands but there's no one on my path

Reflection in the mirror shows a different man at night

According to Jari who wrote the song, it's about when he nearly died of tuberculosis. It's not suicide or old age he's talking about at all, but something that actually happened. That's probably why this song has such a real feeling to it, the emotions here are genuine. Other songs on related topics are usually a bit weak because the person writing the music and lyrics normally hasn't actually experienced what he's writing about. Also, I think the music itself conveys the emotions far better than the lyrics alone ever could.
That is very interesting. (Assuming you're being truthful) I did not know that was the intention of the song. I completely agree with you about the music's power in conveying these emotions. I have not been this inspired by a band in quite a while. I know this sounds silly, but whenever I hear this song, (especially the main riff) I am flooded with an intense awareness of my mortality, sort of a futile feeling, and a kind of nostalgia, but simultaneously a rising impulse to find hope and cause meaning and purpose.

I should add, of course, that thank God he survived; and such wonderful things he has contributed.

Yup, that's what music's supposed to do, flood you with an emotion :) It does with sound what good poetry does with words. Also, here's the interview I was talking about: http://www.metaleater.com/interviews-wintersun12292004.php

I think its about getting old and at night looking back at your life, feeling you just wasted it.
The song depicts a man's struggle to find meaning in his life, whether it be a physical meaning and earthly success, or to discover the divine before he's forced to confront it in the pale of death itself. The latter is certainly a more chilling and compelling theme.
Boring introduction I've read somewhere about Jari's enthusiasm abou lyrics, he said that it ould be interpreted in so many different ways. So of course, the original one is about his experience with tuberculosis like elvin-wizard said.
My interpretaton But i feel another interpretation, when I was reading the lyrics for first time, I've asked myself: "Is it really from first album? Well musicalli it fits to it, but well the lyrics... it sounds like it is about the making of Time Batlle against Time From many points creating of Time I (and II) looks more like battle
From first line to last i feel this meanng of lyrics, look: "I'm sailing away to undiscovered seas " That's about the overwhelming number of tracks in Time (I), about how new and undiscoverd is what he is planning to be made.
"I reach my hands but there's no one on my path" That's about his problems, no one who will came and help him finally create the album, there's many who tries to help, but it is not still enough.
"I can't sleep cause my body is burning Cold sweat, cannot breath, I'm loosing my mind" This is well known for everybody who has ever create something he realy loved, he really wanted to create well. He can't sleep, he must continue in procces of creation. He's changing, he's concentrete only on Time, he is not Jori, he is someone who is creating Time "Reflection in the mirror shows a different man at night"
"Watching to the night, the hope is gone Carrying so much burden in my heart Watching to the night with tired eyes Waiting for nothing all my life" Now he is realising that it's too hard for him. That he's just wainting, trying to make it better, but still nothing happens.
And this way, every sentence could be interpreted, this is very interesting "Fighting everyday, but it feels like, it's just the same Oh time, you cut my heart and soul" He spend eight years of hard work and he made only half of his work... Still fighting, but no achievments and i think that is clear how to interpret "Oh time, you cut my heart and soul"
Finally "I feel nothing, but hate and love So much fire inside, so much left undone" He Loves what he is creating and he hates... well... he hates what he is creating (Time I a II) he's full by inspiration, so many songs he want to write, so many tracks to put in them... but after so many years, only three songs, so much left undone...
i love finnish guitars
Probably a stab in the dark, but maybe this song is about suicide? Alot of the lines do kind of hint towards it.
