Crumb by Crumb Lyrics
Maybe in you I'll believe
Maybe I'll believe in you
The future of my understanding of love
Many a time I've before
Before I've many a time
Knocked a stranger's door
Discretion hardly I'm known for
Probably has nothing to, nothing at all in the world to do with you
Just your lower lip on the floor
But baby I gotta get through
Crumb by crumb in this big black forest
Maybe in you I'll believe
Maybe I'll believe in you
Suddenly I'm not myself
Behind the facade is a lonely fountain, here
Suddenly you are the one
Who opens the gates to this unruly garden
Come and let this man go, you
'Cause baby I got to get through
Crumb by crumb in this big black forest
Maybe in you I'll believe
Maybe I'll believe in you
Suddenly you're not yourself
Behind the facade is a lonely angel, still
Suddenly I am the one who opens the gates to this now gloomy garden
Come and let this man go crumb by crumb in this big black forest
You I'll believe, crumb by crumb in this big black forest
You I'll believe, crumb by crumb in this big black forest...
Maybe I'll believe in you
The future of my understanding of love
Many a time I've before
Before I've many a time
Knocked a stranger's door
Discretion hardly I'm known for
Probably has nothing to, nothing at all in the world to do with you
Just your lower lip on the floor
Crumb by crumb in this big black forest
Maybe in you I'll believe
Maybe I'll believe in you
Behind the facade is a lonely fountain, here
Suddenly you are the one
Who opens the gates to this unruly garden
Come and let this man go, you
Crumb by crumb in this big black forest
Maybe in you I'll believe
Maybe I'll believe in you
Behind the facade is a lonely angel, still
Suddenly I am the one who opens the gates to this now gloomy garden
Come and let this man go crumb by crumb in this big black forest
You I'll believe, crumb by crumb in this big black forest
You I'll believe, crumb by crumb in this big black forest...

One of the greatest things about the song is the obvious allusion to the tale of Hansel and Gretel. The speaker's love is the person he will follow through life perhaps. The lyrics are absolutely amazing, but it's Rufus, so that goes without saying.
I love the female backing part in the chorus, it's so lovely and smokey.
Does anyone know what this song means aside from the Hansel and Gretel reference? (I love this song's lyrics, well thought out and clever)
Oha and I think the lyric is "Come and let this man adore you".
I agree, I think the lyric is "Come let this man adore you." Anywho, I really like the reference to Hansel and Gretel and the overall feel of the song. I think he's saying, maybe I'll learn to believe in you and trust you, but I have to do it crumb by crumb, or bit by bit, little by little. And suddenly, they are the keys to each others' gardens, but both are gloomy and unruly. So maybe he realizes that even though he is the key to a happiness of some sort, unless he can learn to love and trust that person, his "garden" so to speak will remain unruly until that person can come and spruce it up a bit. :] I don't know, just my thought.
This song is so beautiful...as with everything it's what the song says to you that makes it poignant...I think Rufus is saying that he has loved many times, too freely his heart on his sleeve, but now I have met you I realise I haven't loved at all. But I'm scared to open up and show you the sadness inside myself which I can see you are taking as rejection...but I've got to protect myself. But you have me, I am compelled to open up to you and, with you opening up in return I find that you are just as dark and sad as myself....maybe we can make this work...I believe I have something real.
i believe the lyric is "Suddenly I am the one who opens the gates to this now blooming garden"
