Old Whore's Diet Lyrics

An old whore's diet
Gets me going in the morning
Ain't nothing like it
Gets me going in the morning

To say I love you
Gets me going where I want to
Oh, gets me going
Oh, gets me going in the morning

(Repeats)

Hell, either here or Hell will do
Either here or Hell will employ you
Suicidal assistance
An old whore's diet

The "old Chinese food" comment is correct. That's what Rufus cites is an "Old whore's diet." I think he's since embellished the origins of the song by saying an old whore's diet is old Chinese food AND acid or some other drug (which as someone else said, he was very into for a period).

The story is that while on tour one night he was quite hungry and all that was left in the hotel fridge was old Chinese food. He ate it anyway.

I always thought an old whore's diet was sex. :o

I mean. He also says "to say I love you / gets me going where I want to", and that kind of goes along with sex in the morning.

I dunno.

Yup, it's Antony from the wonderful Antony and the Johnsons. Rufus and Antony are friends and have both wowed the New York music scene. They are also both gay icons in their own right. Lol, I think Rufus may have been saying that an Old Whore's Diet was leftover Chinese food a bit tongue in cheek. Rufus notoriously struggled with an arsenal of different drugs before going into rehab. In a similar way to Elliott Smith, this provided a huge basis for song writing material.

haha I thought he was talking about sex, also!

Okay, I think that you could safely say that the comment about old chinese food is indeed said tongue in cheek. Why in the world would you write a song about chinese leftovers?

Remember, this is two of the biggest gay icons singing, and it is definitely about having sex, or more specifically giving a blowjob or swallowing semen if you want to be literal about it. Something "old whores" might be forced to do to keep them attractive in the market.

And I mean, it ain't nothing like sex to "get you going in the morning", right?

The last part mentioning "either hell or here will do" is probably referring to that he doesn't care if he's performing a sin or not.
