Stabbing Art To Death Lyrics
Shall we use needles or knives to realign your spine?
The tissue degenerates so rapidly,
Perhaps it proves it is the time
To cover your face and smile at me,
To see if I am out of sight, denying ventricle flow,
Revel in your plight tonight, you're such a wonderful person to know,
And my name will rest in utter disdain,
My resentment recieves its wings for flight,
You deceitfully stroll on just the same into your holy light.
With music destroyed, we'll only create noise,
Sweet dissonance is all that you'll have left,
We'll dance across its grave, The art of singing empty praise,
With knives of hope and peace, Stab art to death.
And glowing you speak in the friendliest tongue sentinments of gold,
And oh the sweetest songs are sung and the sweetest lies are told,
So spread this virus and seek yourself you pursue it quite relentlessly,
When sunday comes you'll raise your hands to sing,
What a glorious sight to see.
Yet I see true art, I see her, and I see you,
And Father you inspire me to sing to you,
You inspire me to sing to you,
Burn all the flags and the money sacrifice and laugh,
For you I'll give everything,
Just to linger on your lips and feel your fingertips,
You are an angel,
Art is not the world, Art is in our heart,
And so I am the prince of sounds that make ears ring,
My princess kiss me with your sweet lips and lo, my heart will sing,
If art is in yourself, or in a class at school,
If art is ego and selfishness, and at the mercy of primitive tools,
We sing sweet goodbyes in screams and screeches and bury these knives in your heart,
No paintings or poems to let you live on we've seen the last of art,
As servants and lovers we wash your feet and we cry out into the dark,
The noise, the beauty, the love you bring me stabs the knives right into art,
Art is not the world, Art is in our hearts, Stab art to death.

showbread is not screamo. screaming is not the end of art. there are so many bands right now that are building art continuously. and screaming is not bringing art to a close, so many people out there are showing us what art means.
other than that i agree with all of you guys on what this song means. now im about to go write a paper for english on this song. yay.
i would also like to point out the one line josh repeats over and over and over and over: "You inspire me to sing to you." i think the point he's really trying to make there is that so many "worship" songs today are just one line repeated over & over w/ no meaning. we may SAY (or sing in this case) that God inspires us, yet our art lacks that inspiration. i'm tired of worship songs that are unoriginal and uninspired. if we truly seek to worship God in our songs, i believe we should give Him our best, not just a line repeated.
this is another knife stabbed into art.
art is not the world, art is in our heart. that preatty much covers it dont live for earthly needs live to glorify God
in the original version of this song on the album "Life, Kisses, and Other Wasted Efforts", the second verse is about twice as long. it inlcudes these lines:
No scalpel, pill or stitch, no religious sales pitch will ever bring the art that's dying back. and so we are the heirs, of this glowing lack of care our hearts in one discord we all cry out for blood and spit we clap, the amps are feeding back my heart is filled with the one to whom I shout
this song is fairly straightfoward, though I think there is a bit more to it than zanebob has suggested. I think the main focus of the song (especially referring back to the title) is that God gave us art in order to further glorify and worship Him. however, we have warped His gift and used it for our own self glorification and personal gain. I think Josh is crying out the desperate need to destroy the current mode of thinking (that art belongs to us, not God) and return to true worship.
In my humble opinion this is the best song Showbread has let out. It is so poetic and so powerful. And, oh, when they play it live they do it so well. You can tell what passion was put into this, and the message is pur forth so strongly. Art is not the world, art is in our hearts. It's so true. God gives us true art, the beauty that is him. If art is ego and selfishness at the mercy of primitive tools...we kill art so well don't we? Praise be to God, the one true definition of art and the one we long to please.
Sincerely Yours, Age of Reptiles
and may Raw Rock kill you forever and ever, amen.
I agree with all of the above. The song is about how God gave us music as a gift with which we honor and praise him. We ran with it and made it into something else, we are killing it.
Art is not the world; art is in our hearts. Great words. I almost had that engraved on my iPod.
I think this song is Josh Dies at his finest. When I first listened to the album I heard this and was like...This song is epic...and then when I read the lyrics to understand everything I didn't catch on the first run I was awe struck.
To me it also seems that Josh thinks that screamo/raw rock is the last hurrah in terms of music. "we sing good bye in screams and screeches, and bury these knives in your heart". So good bye comes in the form of screamo as we put the knives in the heart of art and thus end it. Overall this song is amazing. Simply amazing. I can't wait for Age of Reptiles.
God Bless
