Noose Dressed Like a Necklace Lyrics
a cadillac drives down my street
a bead of sweat pourin slow down a palm line
i see a bumper sticker
it's a bearded man with a wanted sign
a myth we've made to scare out fears away
a slogan that we slap on all our misdirected hate
a muddy symbol meant to mitigate our pain
but it's really just a desert corpse
we've painted on the wall out in some cave
anyway
i don't know where he's gonna park that thing
my neighborhood drunk's on line at the deli
with his shaky hands and his swollen face he waits for his coffee
he blacks out curbside every night
and every day crawls back towards wall street
so i don't see it like it's us and them
i just see everybody working for that same eternal weekend
droning on and on and on and never doing what we wanted
heavy legs two steps behind some forever dangling carrot
and i'm tired of this
so who's to say that we can't just fucking change it?
and i know it seems dramatic
but i treat it like a crisis
the office to the coffin
all our time and talent wasted
and that weight against your throat
is that a noose dressed like a necklace?
from here i couldn't
really tell the difference
either way i say
let's not take any chances
cause i don't know where he's gonna park that thing
no i don't know where he's gonna park that thing
no i don't know where he's gonna park that thing
a bead of sweat pourin slow down a palm line

It makes me think of the sad state of world and it inspires me to continue following my dream of becoming a lawyer. I want to be proactive and Kevin Devine puts it quite well when he says, "And I'm so tired of this so who's to say that we can't just fucking change it?"
i love this song, especially the point devine is trying to make, hard working people hoping for unrealistic goals and never taking the chance to acheive, post tradgedy of his country and the personal thoughts and feelings these things arise. atleast that's the way i understand it, genious.
The imagery of the title line, "Noose dressed like a necklace," astounds me continually. Who thinks of that? It's amazing.
"And I know it seems dramatic, but I treat it like a crisis..." who doesn't feel that way at some point in their life?
besides the somewhat obvious allusion with the line "it's a bearded man with a wanted sign." directed towards osama bin laden, i'm pretty sure. as if we're just using him to make our pain go away for whatever has happened.
i could be wrong though.
and for the rest i've always taken it as the neighborhood drunk is just like everyone else, he can still be on wallstreet, but be a self-damaging human just trying to get the "same eternal weekend" that we all want and that we're never getting at, always following behind a dangling carrot. (reminds me of bugs bunny!)
this song just really speaks equality and frustration to me over the question of "whose to say we can't just fucking change it?"
and by osama i most definitely meant saddam.
I think the second part of this song is about how the popularity of the human race just work and work and then die without ever doing something for themselves. hence the "i just see everybody working for that same eternal weekend droning on and on and on and never doing what we wanted" All the same great song.
i am always impressed with kevin devine's imagery in his lyrics.
"a myth we've made to scare out fears away a slogan that we slap on all our misdirected hate a muddy symbol meant to mitigate our pain but it's really just a desert corpse we've painted on the wall out in some cave"
i can't get over how amazing he is.
did anyone think about what the 'where he's going to park that thing' meant? It always bugged me that I couldn't figure out what he was trying to get across with that line. My friend said she had two theorys: 1)While writing the song he's driving around and is getting frustrated with the car in front of him. 2)He doesn't know which way the country will go concerning the war and the 'He' is either the country as a whole or Bush.
this is my favourite song by kevin. the lyrics are absolutely incredible. i think that it's about all the problem that we have in today society and how we have to keep working to fix them. and how vanity is everywhere. the outside of everyone and everything means so much more than what's actually important. the poster shows how the looks of a person mean to so much more than what's inside and "is that a noose dress liked a necklace?", i think that mean, are you kidding from everything, hiding behind your clothes (necklace) instead of actually going out and doing something to change the problems in the work.
my favorite line in this song is, "i just see everybody working for that same eternal weekend. droning on and on and on and never doing what we wanted". that's my exact outlook on life.
kevin couldn't have said it any better.
regarding "i don't know where he's gonna park that thing," a cadillac is a big car and finding parking in big cities (especially NYC) is notoriously hard. driving a big, flashy, expensive car (with a bumper sticker of osama bin ladin) and trying to park it could represent a person with a huge sense of entitlement, or an attitude of trying to go into places one doesn't normally belong-- e.g. u.s. in iraq.
