By day I sleep, at night I weep!

O Death, come near me!
Be the one for me, be the one who stays.
My rivers are frozen, and mischosen,
and the shadows around me sickens my heart.

O Death, come near me,
and stay (by my side). Hear my silent cry!
In sadness I'm veiled, to the cross I am nailed,
and the pain around me freezes my world.
My cold world...

In life I've failed,
for years I've wailed.
Frozen in time... left behind...
The rapture of grief is all to find...
The rapture of grief is all!

Behind the shadow of life the lost hopes are grieving.
I seek the night and hope to find love...
So I drown in the silence of lifes short eternity.
The tears fills the void in my heart astray...

Embrace me now, delightful ease!
Give me a world of wonderous peace!
Calm the desperate scream in my heart!

O Death, come near me,
save me from this empty, cold world!
O Life, you have killed me,
so spare me from this couldron of misery!

In life I cry, away I fly...
Chosen to fall within these walls.
The rapture...
The rapture of grief is all!

Oh, shed a tear for the loss of innocense,
for the forsaken spirits who aches... in us.
Cry for the heart who surrenders to pain,
for the solitude of those left behind!

Behold the pain and sorrow of the world,
dream of a place away from this nightmare.
Give us love and unity, under the heart of night.
O Death, come near us, and give us life!

I this world of pain I am better of dead!
Give me love, or give me... death!

O Death, come near me!
I have summoned you!

I'm kinda into death and thrash metal... I really wasn't into gothic from the very beginning (though I'm starting to enjoy post-punk artists XD), but for these artists I've always done an exception. And that song symbolizes everything I like about them... The wonderous, heavy atmospheres they convoy, the vocal artists (especially the female one ._.), the absolute cure for the harmonic enviroment of every song... and last, but not least, their poetical talent, which is the matter that counts most, when talking about the meaning of their songs. First of all, the song is a symbolistic hymn to death. It's a poem dense with sorrow and melancholy. The protagonist is not clear: we don't know if it's a man or a woman, we don't know if there's just one or a whole group. In my opinion, that alone gives the idea of universality of a certain pain. There's no distinction, as long as one's capable of coming in such a situation, when someone gets to befriend the same painful demon that's slaughtering his emotions ("...The rapture of grief is all..."). Melancholy is hereby pictured as a feeling so immense and deep that captures every single one of us and links everyone into this suffering and, eventually, into death ("...Death, come near us and give us life..."). Death is then pictured, in an existencialistic manner, as a Saviour from the pain that stems from living. On the other side, that's a feeling that isolates someone from the world and makes he feel like he's a vagabond, a man with no country ("...in my heart astray... For the solitude of those left behind..."). Love is very important too. As much as one yearns for love so deeply and becomes aware of the void inside him ("...the tears fills the void in my heart astray..."), he's got nothing to but to hope for love to come ("...I seek the night and hope to find love..."). That feeling, however, is so bewildering that the protagonist loses his faith ("...the lost hopes are grieving..."), his hope ("...Oh, shed a tear for the loss of innocence...") and wants to come to a final resolution with Death herself ("...Give me love or give me death... Death come near me, I've summoned you..."). A beautiful artwork, entwined with excellent poetry and strong emotions. Everytime I get to listen to this, I get trapped into its charming, melancholical spiral... Withering inside the burning pessimism I often come to assume, when I gaze in the world and ask myself if there's still love left for me... If my dedication and my trust in love is just going to waste... Anyway... It's plainly Art.

Uh, this part isn't even in the song:

"I this world of pain I am better of dead! Give me love, or give me... death!

O Death, come near me! I have summoned you!"

Asides from that, I love this song. I think the meaning is fairly straight forward. It's a person/s who want to die because life has given them nothing but grief. There's nothing good to live for, and death is the 'hero', I guess.

"Oh, shed a tear..." probably the best part of the song. I love it to pieces but it is really depressing.

I do agree with previous comments, but for me this song is simply a quite poetic description of depression. Every line of these lyrics say perfectly how depressed people feel.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
