She seems dressed in all of me
Stretched across my shame
All the torment and the pain
Leaked through and covered me
I'd do anything to have her to myself
Just to have her for myself
Now I don't know what to do
I don't know what to do
When she makes me sad

She is everything to me
The unrequited dream
A song that no one sings
The unattainable
She's a myth that I have to believe in
All I need to make it real is one more reason
I don't know what to do
I don't know what to do
When she makes me sad

But I won't let this build up inside of me
But I won't let this build up inside of me
But I won't let this build up inside of me
But I won't let this build up inside of me

I catch in my throat
Choke
Torn into pieces
I won't, no
I don't want to be this

But I won't let this build up inside of me
(Won't let this build up inside of me)
I won't let this build up inside of me
(Won't let this build up inside of me)
I won't let this build up inside of me
(Won't let this build up inside of me)
I won't let this build up inside of me
(Won't let this build up inside of me, won't let this build up inside of me)

She isn't real
(Won't let this build up inside of me)
I can't make her real
(Won't let this build up inside of me)
She isn't real
(Won't let this build up inside of me)
I can't make her real
(Won't let this build up inside of me)

I think its about an actual woman, who Corey wants to be in a relationship with, but he can't be for some reason.

He fantasizes about being with her so much the dream started to feel almost real, so when he says "She isn't real" he means the version of her in his fantasy. "I can't make her real" refers to how its not possible to make the dream reality.

Also from listening to the "Vermillion"it seems as if the attraction was sudden ("I don't know what drew my attention, Fixed and crazy aphid attraction"). When you compare this to the line "My love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again" from Snuff (I know they were written at separate times in his life, this is just something I noticed), it suggests that something majorly impacted his life, and he didn't face it so his mind created fouls emotions for someone.

Parts also show that he knows this has happened and is ashamed of it: "Stretched across my shame." When he thinks of her he feels ashamed of the way he fault. He felt week for not dealing with whatever happened in his life directly.

"I catch in my throat Choke Torn into pieces I won't, no I don't want to be this"

This suggests that he was "torn to pieces" by the event in his life. It destroyed him, threw him in to depression. "I don't want to be this" suggests he's identified this and wants to stop loving the one he loves.

Bare in mind this is the second part of "Vermillion." The first part is basically about how he feels about "she" and the confusion created by the suddenness of the powerful emotions he felt for her. This part is about him realizing why he suddenly fell for her and wanting to get over her.

I don't know what the event in question could be, I haven't done much research in to Corey's life. I know at the time he had an alcohol problem. If any one has any ideas I'd like to know.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
