That's My Boy Lyrics
That's my boy
American son
Hope I'm not around
When he gets the idea
To buy a gun.
That's our boy
America's gone
Hope I'm not to blame
When he gets the idea
To kill someone.
How do you ever really love someone?
How do you ever really love someone?
The flag's been broken
By an enemy
Raised on MTV
Raised on you and me
How do you ever really love someone?
How do you ever really love someone?
Gone, yeah, he's gone
And I have known nothing 'bout you
Yeah, he's gone
And he's never coming back.
Where's our saviour?
I'm looking for a sign
Just need something to clean
The blood from my numb, weary mind
How do you ever really love someone?
How do you ever really love someone?
American son
Hope I'm not around
When he gets the idea
To buy a gun.
America's gone
Hope I'm not to blame
When he gets the idea
To kill someone.
How do you ever really love someone?
The flag's been broken
Raised on MTV
Raised on you and me
How do you ever really love someone?
And I have known nothing 'bout you
Yeah, he's gone
And he's never coming back.
I'm looking for a sign
Just need something to clean
The blood from my numb, weary mind
How do you ever really love someone?

well to me its definitely about violence caused by youths of today's world. halkon has a point. these days some parents dont care for their children and nuture them. so they grow up being neglected, some without education and therefore cant apply for a job which leads to violence against others. these lyrics have so much meaning, thrhythm is simply great and catchy :P
Amazed no one has said a word about this song, piety, its so good. I hear this song and I immediately think school shootings. The lyrics seem to reflect the feelings of the families of the shooters.
Yeah I wished this song could have made it on Nude it would have completted that album. Ambiguous yet straight-foreword, diffently about school shootings.
I just got today the double CD after waiting a few months. It's by far my favorite song on the CD, the lyrics are great.
But I will agree with both of you, in that school shootings just come to mind. But you could take it to a higher step. Nowadays, parents are being less of parents, kids are growing up, getting the idea that they can do anything and everything, and not get in trouble cause mom&dad are going to save them.
It sucks. But it's reality.
Also, im sure if he would've worked on it more, the song would be way better. There are parts in the song that you can tell he needs to make better, but, its an amazing song.
Just listening to this song I got the idea that the meaning in this song is more generic - hidden beneath the obvious "school shootings" and the like topic. To me it's about generic issue when someone sees the problem in society, and instead of trying to change the world for the better, they leave it to someone else to fix. As in "I know there is a problem with my kid, but I will just hide not to be around when he fucks up". The last verse strenghthens this notion by raising a question of a weakling "where is our savior" when the solution is as simple as - go and do your duties, hard work, make world better by starting from yourself.
After all love is nothing more that another hard work.
