I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river, and it made me complete

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know

Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin

And if you have a minute, why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go?
So why don't we go?

Ah
Oh

This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know
Somewhere only we know

This is such a painful melancholic song. It's a convoluted dilemma since he cares so much about this significant other and she is just slipping away. He's agonizing over memories of what once were between them and he feels that he's the only one who remembers them while she is simply enjoying her life and it doesn't bother her at all. So he's at a crossroads cuz his feelings are too great for a normal friendship and he wants stability or to come to grips whether her heart feels the same or is she going to continue to just hang him on the line to dry. All the memories will continue to haunt him until he knows whether they're either fully committed to one another or break away, because every time he sees her it hurts him to not say anything he feels and it's perplexing him to believe that their relationship was nothing more than a dream for a moment and now it means nothing to her. Also he yearns to go back to "the place we used to love" meaning the feelings they once had and the beauty of what was an intimate relationship. The "branches" perhaps refer to his memories of that relationship which is represented by the "fallen tree" and those memories nag at him incessantly, especially when he thinks of her.
