Coheed and Cambria – The Willing Well IV: The Final Cut Lyrics 12 years ago
This has a very Pink Floyd-ish sound to it, and it seems intentional given the title of the song.

The most likely interpretation, at least from a story perspective, is a dialog from Claudio to The Writer. The Writer has been convinced by his insanity that the only way to finish the story is to rid himself of the ghost of his former love, Erica Court, by killing off her 'fictional' counterpart, Ambellina. As an aspect of The Writer himself, Claudio realizes that he is in love with Ambellina but that he has no power to save her, and will ultimately just be forced to give in and become the Crowing so that the story can end.

Tim Minchin – White Wine In The Sun Lyrics 12 years ago
In countries where the predominant faith is Christianity, it can sometimes be tough to be an agnostic\atheist - especially around the holidays and Christmas. Starting around November, I frequently get asked by online acquaintances why, if I'm an agnostic-atheist, I still celebrate Christmas?

I point to this song as the reason why I still celebrate those holidays.

Minchin is a comedian, and so he can't avoid some flippant humor in here. For example:

"And yes I have all of the usual objections to consumerism
The commercialisation of an ancient religion
To the westernisation of a dead Palestinian
Press-ganged into selling Playstations and beer
But I still really like it."

Minchin is highlighting the fact that Christmas has become incredibly commercialized, which is ironic since consumerism tends to contrast starkly with the message of humility and anti-materialism present in the Bible. But he can't avoid joking about it, by referring to how Christ has, to an extent, become 'Ameircanized' and is used to sell products.

Bo Burnham – What's Funny Lyrics 12 years ago
Heard this on satellite radio on the way home from work the other day. I have to admit this got me laughing. He's got a pretty limber tongue on him.

Macklemore – Thrift Shop Lyrics 13 years ago
The phrase "pop some tags" refers to a form of stealing - swapping the tags from a lower-priced item to a higher-priced item in order to get it for less. "Come-up" usually refers to stealing from someone (or killing someone to rob them - probably not in this case).

To me, the song sounds like it's mocking the 'trashy chic' fashion trends that are currently popular. Some celebrities are spending large amounts of money for trendy 'fashion' that looks like it came from a thrift store, and the narrator of the song walks into the party in a similar 'trashy' get-up that he got at a thrift shop - and not even at full price, as he swapped the tags to get it for less.

Keane – Somewhere Only We Know Lyrics 13 years ago
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following:

"We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..."

With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

Chevelle – The Red Lyrics 13 years ago
Pete Loeffler, the lead singer of Chevelle, stated in an interview regarding the song and video that "The Red" is a commentary on frustration and anger in general - becoming so upset that you literally are seeing "red". The video makes this fairly clear as well; Loeffler is a speaker at an anger management seminar, and is watching the anger in the attendees build up throughout the song.

Ed Sheeran – The A Team Lyrics 13 years ago
According to an interview with Billboard, Sheeran noted that this song came from spending time assisting at a homeless shelter. After hearing all the stories of the homeless there, he wrote these lyrics (amongst others).

In the interview, he stated that saying the woman was in "the class A team" was a subtle way of referring to her addiction to a class A drug; this subtlety was intentional, as Sheeran wanted the overall tone of the song to sound somewhat cheery to hide the serious nature of the lyrics' meaning.

Rent – Light My Candle Lyrics 14 years ago
The truth is that there are numerous layers to this particular song; several have been mentioned already.

First, Mimi is a heroin user. Heroin is typically cooked in a spoon over an open flame - a candle, for instance. So the top layer, literal, and obvious meaning of the song is that Mimi is looking for a light for her candle so that she can do her drugs.

However, watching the scene again you'll find that this can't account for all of it, because before entering we can see Mimi standing outside Roger and Mark's flat (during One Song Glory), and her candle is lit. She blows it out intentionally.

Why? She finds Roger attractive and is looking for a reason to introduce herself for companionship. So in this case, "light my candle" refers to Mimi's search for love.

On a more blunt level, the theme of many of Mimi's lyrics here are sexual in nature, so "light my candle" could also refer to Mimi looking for a sex partner - in this case, "light my candle" would be to have an orgasm.

From Roger's perspective, it seems like his heart has been somewhat "frozen" of love since the loss of April. Lighting a candle would allow that to be thawed out, so despite his awkwardness, Roger is looking for someone to be with as well.

And unknown to Mimi, Roger was a former heroin-user as well; to him, the candle symbolizes his addiction, which he has "blown out" - so his hesitation toward the end of the song to give Mimi her stash back is an indication that he worries that being with her might relight the candle of his own addiction.

Foster the People – Pumped Up Kicks Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that most folks have nailed it here: The lyrics tell the story of a poor or middle-class kid, probably outcast at school for not being popular ("pumped-up kicks" being a reference to the overpriced tennis shoes and sneakers the rich, popular kids wear), who eventually goes to school with his father's gun and shoots the place up.

I also think that there's an insinuation that the kid probably kills his own father before going on his rampage, because of an abusive relationship:

"Daddy works a long day / He be coming home late, yeah, he's coming home late / And he's bringing me a surprise / Because dinner's in the kitchen and it's packed in ice"

seems to indicate that the father is neglectful ("works a long day") and is an alcoholic (his "dinner" is a case of beer in the fridge) who probably beats his son (the "surprise" he's bringing is another beating - not really a surprise at all). The son sits at the table the night before his rampage with a cigarette in his mouth and the gun in front of him, waiting for his father to come in so Robert can pay him back for all the beatings.

Dr. Dre – I Need A Doctor Lyrics 14 years ago
The lyrics on this are pretty straightforward. In a way, it's a 'love' song - not romantic love, but deep friendship.

Eminem is worried because he feels like Dre has lost focus and decisiveness, and perhaps has been admitting to caring about what other people think; Em is reminding his mentor that he's there for him, and will always be there for him. In the last verse, Dre confirms his friendship with Eminem and takes some shots at former friends who have left him over the years.

Low – Over the Ocean Lyrics 14 years ago
This was my first introduction to Low. Personally, I'm not sure that the lyrics have a deeper meaning, but I still look for meaning even though I don't know that it's actually there.

The only meaning I feel fairly certain of is from the last line: "And if I'm wrong, the mighty and strong will be rejected" has always seemed to be an opposing reference to the Biblical concept of "And the meek shall inherit the earth."

Low – (That's How You Sing) Amazing Grace Lyrics 14 years ago
In regards to the second verse: I think that it might be a reference to a few of the original lyrics from Amazing Grace: "Amazing grace / how sweet the sound / that saved a wretch like me". In this case, that "sweet sound" of grace is "like razors" in the listener's ears. He hears the sounds of redemption, but because he is so wedded to his vice, the thought of being redeemed is painful to him.
