Happy to Hang Around Lyrics
They were following me
They were following everyone
They had visions of me
Holding hands walking in to the sun?
Now people get down, people get down, people get hurt
When you did it to me
I was already in the ground
And I'll never get into your heart
Though I don't even want to start
I'll never get into your heart
I'm just happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Take a picture of me
And show it to everyone
And no more pictures of you
No more love, no more setting sun
Now people get down, people get down, people get hurt
And when you did it to me
I was already in the dirt
And I'll never get into your heart
Though I don't even want to start
I'll never get into your heart
I'm just happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
And I'll never get into your heart
Though I don't even want to start
I'll never get into your heart
I'm just happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
They were following everyone
They had visions of me
Holding hands walking in to the sun?
Now people get down, people get down, people get hurt
When you did it to me
I was already in the ground
Though I don't even want to start
I'll never get into your heart
I'm just happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
And show it to everyone
And no more pictures of you
No more love, no more setting sun
Now people get down, people get down, people get hurt
And when you did it to me
I was already in the dirt
Though I don't even want to start
I'll never get into your heart
I'm just happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Though I don't even want to start
I'll never get into your heart
I'm just happy to hang around
Happy to hang around
Happy to hang around

Great song.
This song is fantastic and I'm sure its one of the best they've done, the guitar rift reminds me so much of Rage's Wake Up.But that just adds to its charm.Definetly one of the best on the album.I love the typical Travisism in the line "people get down, people get down, people get hurt, when you did it to me I was already in the ground" because the first time you hear it you just presume he's going to say dirt, because its the logical thing. I think the song is mainly that he is unsure of what he wants,he knows someone and he wants to be more than friends with her,but it could be that it would be too much bother, she'll never accept him or there's something else stopping him from going out with her. Thus he accepts he can't have her so he's happy just to be friends, and he could be accepting that he could have everything he wants with her, with the exception of everything that a relationship would bring. "I'll never get into your heart, though I don't even want to start,I'll never get into your heart I'm just happy to hang around."

Yup well summed up
I agree, I really like it when the distorted guitar kicks in. It's killer.
To me this is a song about a relationship. The guy feels he has no chance with the woman he wants.
been there, done that.
they guy feels he has no chance with the woman he loves, im agreed with that. BUT is not exactly right that the woman doesnt want him. the girl does want him, but she is evil, she has no heart, something like estella of great expectations. and is not her fault, she just cant love anyone. so she loved the man but she ended breaking his heart, and the man trully loved her, and trusted her, and wanted her more than anything in his life. and he did get hurt, thats why: people get hurt, and when YOU DID IT TO ME (already done, already a heart broken) he was just prepared to the fall: I WAS ALREADY IN THE DIRT., he already saw it coming, and he knew what was going to happen, he knows he is never gonna win the heart of the woman, and he know he doesnt want anymore, and he is just happy to hang around, like a sort of friend, far far away from a relationship so he doesnt get hurt again.
Well...I think it's more than you guys before me said. It's more deep,it's not just about a kinda relationship you mentioned.I just can't figure out what's behind the lines.I mean, just look at the beginning...Who are 'they'?What he's singing about?'They were following me,/They were following everyone/ They had visions of me/Holding hands walking in to the sun?'.These lines complicate the whole song,in rest it's about a relationship. One of the best Travis songs!Love it!:)
This must be about a very difficult relationship, perhaps even love-hate.
Interestingly, Dominique Francon and Peter Keating of the 'Fountainhead' (Ayn Rand is an amazing writer!) keep entering my mind when I read the lyrics. In a nutshell, the relationship between these two, as far as I have read, is strained, first of all, because the woman is an unpredictable and intelligent ice queen who only entertains her suitors; second because the man is the paragon of modern youth, but underneath it all pathetic, vain, in love, and simply "happy to hang around"--that is, willing to be entertained by the woman, if only in the role of a jester. Hmm...
Of course, it can always just be about not ruining a friendship by starting a relationship.
