I saw a Fran Healy solo show the other night, where he talked about the meanings behind some of the songs. Closer, he said, was written to express that thing that happens between people, couples that have been together for a while and start to lose that spark, and that need to just put that extra effort into the relationship, appreciating the other person and just falling back in love with them.
reminds me of crushes i've had in the past - all of whom i couldn't muster up the courage to talk to. most of the times, i hoped some sort of wishful, telepathic connection would let them know how i felt about them ("i've had enough of this parade, i'm thinking of what to say.") when all i really wanted them to know was... ("just need to get closer")
This song, is the only new song this year that i feel bring a contented smile to my face, Travis are amazing, best live band ever. appreciate their fans write catchy, well written thought out thought provoking songs, and can still write the cutey nice stuff. am very happen best album purchased this year :)
i think its about him feeling distant towards someone, because they hurt him in the past, but he wants to give them a second chance, but doesn't know how to do to it. He still feels animosity towards them, but still loves them; he understands the only way to get rid of these feelings is to get closer to that person.
i think it's about couple in a relationship, which didn't work then they broke up. But he still cares for her and so does she.
so..they know that they just need to be closer, without commitment or anything, knowing that they can rely on each other.
Thinking of A second chance (a second chance) --> i swear the inlay says "second dance, second chance" -- whoch probably means they or he realizes that something is missing and he wants to get back to their relationship... well, that's just my thought though...hehe..

I think this song is about being in love with someone and feeling a instict to be as close to them as possible, physically and figuratively.
