So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I've seen you hanging round
This darkness where I'm bound
And this black hole I've dug for me
And silently within
With hands touching skin
The shock breaks my disease
And I can breathe
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
The light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
Your faith like the pain
Draws me in again
She washes all my wounds for me
The darkness in my veins
I never could explain
And I wonder if you ever see
Will you still believe?
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
The light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
Am I that strong
To carry on?
I might change your life
I might save my world
Could you save me?
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
The light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
And the light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
This darkness where I'm bound
And this black hole I've dug for me
And silently within
With hands touching skin
The shock breaks my disease
And I can breathe
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
The light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
Your faith like the pain
Draws me in again
She washes all my wounds for me
The darkness in my veins
I never could explain
And I wonder if you ever see
Will you still believe?
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
The light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
Am I that strong
To carry on?
I might change your life
I might save my world
Could you save me?
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
The light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me
And all of your weight
All you dream
Falls on me it falls on me
And your beautiful sky
And the light you bring
Falls on me, it falls on me

I can see it the same way bazal, but personally, probably through my own experiences, I see it as the girl being quite like his saviour. He was in this dark place, "this black hole I've dug for me," and she's the reason for him to be able to come out of it. The one part says, "You're beautiful sky, the light you bring, it falls on me." It's as though she's all he needed to break through into the light. She heals his wounds and gives him hope. And he asks if he has the strength to keep going now that she's taken him in. I don't know... just my thoughts.
