wow reading the lyrics to this song...and listening to it at the same time, is truly an unreal experience. this song is amazing, this album is amazing, everything jamie has ever put out has been amazing, how could it not be?
I've always personally read the "make me see it's my last year" as JS accepting he can't live on memories alone and looking for validation in deciding to end it all, sort of playing off the "when I give in, will it be okay?" line that precedes it.

i think it's about wanting, but not being wanted. and about only living off of memories or fantasies of somebody wanting you, or a time when somone wanted you. and realizing it's your "last year."

i am in full agreement with horse tamer. its about nostalgia and what happened "last year". its about wishing you could have back what you had once before. there is a live version where jamie sings in replacement: "which boys/which girls/answered your ad/well mom, it was none of them". amazing.
