Q&A
To Another Abyss Lyrics
Not long ago, and yet the image is so vague
I hesitate to label it a memory
There was a show of local color and I failed to stray
Cause I had nothing to offer but insufficiency
And you know that it’s such a bitch
When you learn to scratch that itch
A blatant fallibility
Sooner to some, but eventually
All kids pointed in the same direction
While the human masses and their vain conceptions
Obliterate each other with impunity
And you wonder, “what’s in this for me?”
To another abyss
To no avail
The search is bound to fail
To another abyss
To no avail
So long ago I set sail
And it chills me to the bone
That I’m so far away from home
To another abyss
So what should I do now? What should I celebrate?
Given finite means and a penchant to depreciate
How can I still avow and depend upon a state
That cares nothing for my happiness, welfare, or fate?
And I know I can’t explain
The commotion in my brain
Like a terrifying reality
Deconstructed but inadequately
All gets pointed in the same direction
While the human masses and their vain conceptions
Obliterate each other with impunity
And release the weight of history
chorus
So long ago, so long ago…oh, I set sail
And I’m struggling on the way
And I’m waiting for the day (to another abyss)
And I’m looking for the way back home (to another abyss)
So far away (to another abyss)
So far away (to another abyss)
(to another abyss) So far away
(to another abyss)
I hesitate to label it a memory
There was a show of local color and I failed to stray
Cause I had nothing to offer but insufficiency
When you learn to scratch that itch

It's basically about humanity's constant search for purpose and treying to get back 'home'. All they ever manage to go is find another abyss. Everything they find has a 'penchant to depreciate' (lose its value), and they are fallible.
help! as english is not my mother language, i have problems to figure out the meaning of those two lines:
@waldfee Maybe it was a gay pride parade but he was insufficiently gay so he did not attend.

Good song, not Bad religion's best (atheist peace), but still a good song
I like how you told us what THE best song is.
I like how you told us what THE best song is.
Yes, it is a good song, but what BR song isn't? As for their best, (as good as it is)it's definatly not on this album. Along the way tops my list, along with Fuck Armageddon... This Is Hell, and Suffer (and a few more of course), but that's stictly a matter of opinion.
Onto the song: I belive this is about a search for a better place than either America, Earth, or society itself. My thoughts are kinda loose and incomplete right now, but the verse, "And I know I can't explain..." shows how mankind is destroying themselves over completly stupid reasons, and that's they've been doing it for a long time. And how it's really happening, but there doesn't seem to be a clear reason for it. I'm not sure on what it really means yet, but that's what i've got so far.
"> There was a show of local color and I failed to stray
I could be wrong, but I think the first one means that his country fooled him with the colourful lies and pulled him in so that he didn't realise what he was being told were lies.
The second one means that his support and effort alone is not enough to turn things around for the better- it takes more than one person.
hey cool. wasn't looking at this page since ~4 month ... and then again 2 days after sombody answered: timing.
thanks for your help. the second line is perfectly clear, now. i just would be interested: is the expression: "show of local color" an expression often used? i mean is it an established expression to express something specific, perhaps in relation to nationalism?
hmm okay, suppose this post is rather confusing, sorry ... ähm ... could somebody give the same meaning of "show of local color" in other words?
This song is about strifing for contestance only to come up short. It's about striving to find the truth to something(religion, country political genre) and straying to be your own person only to end up coming back home or to conform to the things you know because it's easier and safer to bullshit yourself.
i`m in the navy and this song reminds me so much of how the us navy sucks.especially the part (How can I still avow and depend upon a state That cares nothing for my happiness, welfare, or fate? )
definetly something to do with going back "home."
its depicting an abyss.. like a swirling whirlpool of water you see of in rough oceans..
and he's in his bout having set said and swirling around in it.. and the bottom whole drops down...
to another abyss..
