God's Love Lyrics

Striking at mental apparitions
Like a drunk on a vacant street
Silently beset by the hands of time
And elegant in its fury
An aberrant crack as skeletons yield
To unrelenting gravity
While viruses prowl for helpless victims
Who succumb rapidly

(Tell me!) Tell me; where is the love?
In a careless creation
When there’s no “above”
There’s no justice
Just a cause and no cure
And a bounty of suffering
It seems we all endure
And what I’m frightened of
Is that they call it “God’s love”

Well we twist in torment and make believe
There’s a truth and we all submit
“Believe my eyes,” my brain replies
To all that they interpret

chorus

I know there’s no reason for alarm
But who needs perspective when it comes to pain and harm
We can change our minds; there’s a better prize

But first you’ve got to…

chorus

They call it God’s love
My pain is God’s love

I think that what they are trying to point out is the stupidity of Christian teaching, how when they don't have an explanation, they resort to "It was God's plan," or "God's Love." In the middle portion when they say "I know there's no reason for alarm," they are saying "Maybe I'm overreacting." But then he looks out at the world, and how pathetically detached the American Christian Right is from the suffering they talk of: "But who needs perspective when it comes to pain and harm" He then realizes that the answers that he's been fed from when he was born are false, or at least incomplete, because he still has all these unanswered questions: "Where is the love?/In a careless creation/When there's no above."

this is an awesome song on the new cd and i am suprised no one has said anyhting. the main ide of this song is think for yourself. open your eyes and think for yourself. like I have said on almost everything I have typed on this site, it is all man-made. "made in china". what is really there that we have not created mentally?

This may be one of the more literal songs done by BR. It really is straight-forward (IMO) saying that all athiests and christians alike experiance the same torments and suffering, but they have different ways of interpriting them.

Gepetto almost has it. Yes, it's about how we all go through suffering and Christians believe that as athiests, our pain is God's love. But it's also about how Christians will deliberately "suspend justice", with the assumption that they can only leave God to judge certain acts. (I.E., the way the president bombs people consistently, or the citizens in Iraq) They believe everyone's true judgement will not happen in this life, therefore they pass severe judgement on other Christians. "There's no justice, just a cause and no cure" We only demand temporary reprieve.

The first line, is the greatest metaphor for Christianity I have ever heard, and my favorite metaphor. "Silently beset by the hands of time, And elegant in its fury" I think this is about how Christianity has changed over time, whereas, it used to be, atleast somewhat believable, and less hypocritic, as compared to now, where it seems full of hate (One of the highest murder motives is religion), and just here to censor and control, and long ago it wasn't as Greg would say it, it wasn't as dogmatic. "While viruses prowl for helpless victims Who succumb rapidly," viruses, are the people who are trying to "spread God's word", and how people are so willing to blindly believe that God is real, and he is there to help us. "(Tell me!) Tell me; where is the love? In a careless creation When there’s no “above” There’s no justice" About how, Christianity has turned quite violent. The "above" I think is metaphor for good, and how there is no justice anymore, just lots of hate.
"Just a cause and no cure And a bounty of suffering It seems we all endure And what I’m frightened of Is that they call it “God’s love” The first part, is how they say, we are all born "dirty", (something Hitler called the Jews, as well as other people he discriminated against, and though, i dont think that is relevent, just something to think about) the suffering we all endure: "Original Sin" and, when they don't have a reasonable explanation, they use some bullshit excuse, like, gods plan or gods love. "Well we twist in torment and make believe There’s a truth and we all submit “Believe my eyes,” my brain replies To all that they interpret" About how people, no matter if they still get tormented, they still blindly believe in god. They think that it's the truth, so they all submit and nurture the "cause" to help get a cure. The last part, is Greg saying, that he uses his eyes, and sees no evidence in the religious rights claims of redemption, or anything else they say. "We can change our minds; there’s a better prize" He is saying, we can stop this, the religious right and their control, that we can work for real change, real peace and happiness, rather than just waiting for some god to come and rescue us, and do it all for us. The last lines, are how, he is in pain, from seeing other people follow these beliefs blindly, giving money to churches, and all that, while, in reality, they aren't getting anything in return.

Ok, that is all i have to say, this is one of my favorite BR songs....

I think this song is comparing God's love to the likes of fairies, peter pan and other make-believe phenomena. The song does not disparage God himself, but only mankind's interpretation of His "love". To me, this song is about how people look beyond logic and reason when they are faced with despair and pain.

What does a group of atheist musicians know about god. This group is short on honesty

Bad religion uses Religion as a metaphor for all kinds of injustices. Most likely beacuse Religion is, In short terms, hypocracy.

i think part of the meaning of the song is expressing the horror that religious people, mainly christians, call what's happening on this planet god's love. go's love is everywhere. if that were true, it's a very unpleasant thought.

isn't it supposed to be "indelicate in its fury"?
