Speed Dial No. 2 Lyrics
I don't need you anymore
I'm okay and I am sure
I don't need you anymore
Yeah I'm ok, I'm reassured
And I don't need you not today
I promise I'll call I promise I'll say
I don't need you not to stay
And if you ever need me I'll reciprocate
Your shoulders in my pocket
Speed dial No. 2
See you when I need you
See you when I do
See you when I do
Do you need me, I am here
Can you ask, can you be clear
Yes you need me, I appear
Now you are me, I am here
Your shoulders in your pocket
Speed dial No. 2
Call it when you need me
See you when I do
See you when I do
Call me when you need me
Just call me when you need me
Call me when you need me
See you when I do
I'm okay and I am sure
I don't need you anymore
Yeah I'm ok, I'm reassured
I promise I'll call I promise I'll say
I don't need you not to stay
And if you ever need me I'll reciprocate
Speed dial No. 2
See you when I need you
See you when I do
See you when I do
Can you ask, can you be clear
Yes you need me, I appear
Now you are me, I am here
Speed dial No. 2
Call it when you need me
See you when I do
See you when I do
Just call me when you need me
See you when I do

I think you all are missing the point of the song. The music and how it's sung suggests a deep longing for acceptance from a lover. There's a raw sensuality going on along with a superficial denial of the physical power her lover has over her. She doesn't want to be the 2nd on his list, she wants to be first, but she helplessly tries to deny it. Haunting to say the least and highly seductive. Also, I believe the "my shoulder's in your pocket, speed dial no 2..." means that her need for his touch resides right there in his pocket. All he has to do is call her when he needs her. She's very available. The song is classic to say the least.
I concur with most of your interpretation Dutch, though the lyric is " Your shoulder's in my pocket...speed dial # 2," which I see as, this 'shoulder' to lean on, cry on, snuggle into, etc., is available on speed dial--easy to access, not quite the same as an in-person shoulder, but there nonetheless. Definitely a call for increased intimacy from this mystery partner. Great song. Yearning, sensual, poignant.

@Dutch70 this is exactly my interpretation too!

The way it is sung gives me chills. I think it is about a guy and a girl who used to talk a lot and flirt a bit. They go out as friends and she falls in love with him. She knows that they do not have a single chance together and tries to get over him, but at the same time she hopes he will give her a sign (a sign that is never going to come).
I think it's like: I don't need you now, but when I do, I'll call ya, 'cause I know you'll always be there for me, and vice versa.
I love the line "your shoulders in my pocket". This song is awesome.
where i live... speed dial #1 is reserved to call 911 direct.... therefore.... speed dial number 2 is the highest accolade a phonebooker can obtain... "I don't need you not to stay" damned tricky double negatives... a song as fetching as its author, Sia's voice is as sweet as sugarcane
Kind of a "friends with benefits" situation... sort of where you see them for just one purpose, then it's, "Get the hell outta here, I'm finished."
i really love this song, but i don't get that "your shoulders in my pocket" part. what does it mean? i'm not a native speaker so it might be a phrase or something that i don't know.
It's not a phrase we generally use. But the way I see it, the shoulder represents support. We have a saying here in America (and probably other english speaking Nations): "A shoulder to cry on" which basically means someone to support you when you need it. She has her cell phone in her pocket, and she knows that if she needs a shoulder to cry on, she can ask him through her phone. That's basically what it means.
