Candle Lyrics

Just take this candle, it's the one you gave to me
It has enough light, just enough to torture me

Just take this candle, it's the one you gave to me
I left you crying at the alter of your mind

Before you let the world mess up your soul
Oooooooh, oooooooooooooh, ooh

I lit the candle used to light your hair on fire
I left you dying in the shelter of your mind

Before you let the world mess up your soul
Try to be the girl you once were
Oooooooh, ooooooooooooh
Oooooooh, ooooooooooooh, Ooh

i think its about the candle being her heart she gave to him and he gavi it back crumpled and mistreated but it still had enough light in it to make him feel guilty(torture me) for abusing it and it seems he has promised her lots or something and she got the wrong idea in her head so it hurt her when he left and hes saying before u let everyone else screw u up try and be the girl u where before when u had a heart i dunno thats my take on it.

To me, this song makes the impression of a broken relationship. Guy/girl, obviously...I -do- think "candle" is a metaphor for heart...or maybe even innocence. The guy gives it back, and of course the girl is hurt. He feels guilty, but he wants her to find herself again and be the girl she used to be again. He believes she can do it without him.

I would say that the candle=love, but that's basically the same thing I guess. Anyway, I agree with what's been said, but to add to that, the "I left you crying at the alter of your mind" reminds me of a wedding that he didn't show up to. He left her crying at the altar of a church. Don't think it's literal, but more that the led her on to believe that he would be with her forever, marry her, etc...but then ended up leaving her. He's pleading with her to not give up on love just because they didn't work out. She still may be able to find love with somebody else as long as she remains open to it and doesn't close off her heart. She needs to be the same person she was when he met her.
