If You Were Here Lyrics
[Father: What is it Annie?
Child (whispers): I miss you ]
If you were here
I know that you would
Truly be amazed
At what's become of what you made
If you were here
You would know how I treasured every day
How every single word you spoke
Echoes in me like a memory of hope
When you were here
You could not feel the value that I placed
On every look that crossed your face
When you were here
I did not know just how I had embraced
All that you hid behind your face
Could not hide from me
'Cause it hid in me too
[Father: How are you Tiger? This is great fun, to get to with you, like this. In fact I'm going to do it more often]
Now that I'm here I hear you
And wonder if maybe you can hear yourself
Ringing in me
Now that you're somewhere else.
[Father: I miss you a lot]
'Cause I hear your strange music gentle and true
[Father: I'm sharing with you some of my reflections]
Singing inside me with the best parts of you
Now that I'm here
[Father: But I am so proud of everything you do there]
Father: Love you most]
I hope somewhere you hear them too
[Father: Next time I see you you'll proudly sing it back to me]
Now that I'm here
[Spoken:] I love you...
[Child: It's okay. You can go now]
Child (whispers): I miss you ]
I know that you would
Truly be amazed
At what's become of what you made
You would know how I treasured every day
How every single word you spoke
Echoes in me like a memory of hope
You could not feel the value that I placed
On every look that crossed your face
I did not know just how I had embraced
All that you hid behind your face
Could not hide from me
'Cause it hid in me too
And wonder if maybe you can hear yourself
Ringing in me
Now that you're somewhere else.
[Father: I'm sharing with you some of my reflections]
Singing inside me with the best parts of you
Now that I'm here
[Father: But I am so proud of everything you do there]
Father: Love you most]
I hope somewhere you hear them too
[Father: Next time I see you you'll proudly sing it back to me]
Now that I'm here

I love Poe for doing this CD, for getting it all out, for using her music as a way to release, for using recordings of her father, for healing herself through her music! It must have been so hard to listen to her fathers voice over and over and pick out what parts she wanted for the CD but at the same time I'm sure it was very healing and I have an immense amount of respect for that.
amazingly beautiful track to her father.
Monday I found out my grandfather was dying. I've listened to this song at least a dozen times since. My grandfather was the sweetest, kindest man, and the line, 'Cause I hear your strange music/gentle and true/ singing inside me with the best parts of you,' always gets me.
aww thats so sad im sorry
i should make a cd. poe is brilliant.
Such a beautiful song about making peace with the past, accepting how things went... and embracing those beautiful, small things that make up memories she has of him. They may not have had the relationship she wished for while he was living, but she can look back on things and appreciate the good that was there. A lot of times, the most important memories are the most trivial to most people.
"You could not feel the value that I placed On every look that crossed your face,"
It's strange to realize how much you looked for approval from someone... yearning to see a smile cross that person's face.
The way she says "I love you" toward the end breaks my heart.
"It's OK, you can go now" is a line from House of Leaves. A mother says it to her newborn child, who was kept on life support due to holes in his brain, and when she speaks the words he dies.
