The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
I agree this is about superficial relationships. There's also an element of addiction in it at the same time. You feel drawn to something that you know isn't good for you but even though you know this you can't stop.
The bit that says "flames are never douzed completely" also feels related to addiction to me. Alcoholics who have stopped drinking often say that even they no longer drink they will permanently be addicted, all it takes is 1 drink and all their problems will start again.
This song is totally about a love addiction. The moth always returns to the flame no matter how many times he is hurt, turned away, burned. The fuse of this love is shot from so many attempts to start the fire. It leaves both people angry and desparate, unable to connect completely, but flying towards each other and hurting with the fire.
The song is about superficial relationships, ones that aren't real and don't have anything under the surface. Like the moth doesn't care if the flame is real, or low, or if it's just smoking, it's talking about a more instant gratification sort of situation; people clinging to eachother because it makes them feel good for the moment.
this song is really determined i think. im guessing its a metaphor for relationships. it doesnt matter if the love is real but he wants that feeling anyway.

I'd never really thought of this song as about addiction before, it's an interesting way of looking at it.
I considered this to be one of Aimee Mann's more optimistic songs...
About a simple kind of love you can have for people that no matter what happens is never truly lost, like the humble image of a moth!
For some reason, I've always viewed this particular song to be about the determination behind love; to find love and to be loved. Some people have the capability of giving unconditional love and may be on a constant search to find one to give it to. They may try and fail, but never give up because they are fueled by the goodness they see in keeping one's heart open.
Everything else said here so far makes sense to me as well, so who knows!
Also, these lyrics are missing the line "a fuse so thoroughly shot" which is pretty important.
Love addiction and some codependency.
Being a cancer patient there "once you're in you can't go back"... You also get a to embrace the crap you are going on. "mean, anger and desperation"... There comes a point in the journey when the patient does not care that the cancer is real. Chemo / Radiation... the fuse that is thoroughly shot. Now you wait for what ever happens when you go on "afterglow"... Just how I see it.
