In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

The beat is her heart beat though she doesn't feel like she is living and she feels like she should carry herself into the otherworld/afterlife.
She doesn't feel like she is actually alive, she just exists and feels nothing but emptyness and she is craving for it to end, but not for her existence to end.

The days just roll on by so meaningless and she just wants a change. It would seem that she has personified change and the lyric "Please be here when I'll arrive, don't die… please ", is addressing is directly and asking it to come and not to give up and leave her life like everything else.
Well that's my take on it. Probably completely wrong but.. oh well.
to me it seems like a song about being jaded(dunno if that's the right term) by the world... she's looking at the lines on her hands...talking to them to find out what went wrong in the previous years of her life yet there are no answers...she feels(as previously stated by others) dead inside and feels that death is the only release...possibly contemplating suicide...yet she prays for someone to find her...and stop her...so she will know someone cares and she wont have to go through with it....
i think it is a song about a friend who is depresed and at the end, the friend trys to commit suiccide. so yea, i agree with Spyke.
I agree with everyone else. I think this song is about being dead on the inside. How much she wishes she felt alive, but in the end she just keeps falling down. All she can do is hope that her inner feelings dont catch up with her and cause her to kill herself.
They redid this song on In a Reverie as 'Falling again'.

This is gonna sound weird, but this version seems like the person isn't dead yet. or maybe the person still wants to believe the person's alive. the other version is more of an acceptance version on the person's death, imo
