Lost it on the chesterfield
Or maybe on
A gamblin' wheel
Lost it in a diamond mine
It's dark as hell
And hard to find
You can climb to the
Top of the highest tree
You can look around
But you still won't see
What I'm lookin' for

Where the good times gone?
Where the good times gone?
All the stupid fun
And all that shit we've done
Where the good times gone?
Well I still don't know

Out in the back
In the old corn field
Underneath the tractor wheel
Thought I'd dig
Till I'd found it first
Broke my back
And died of thirst
You can bribe the devil
You can pray to God
You can sell off
Everything you got
And you still won't know

Where the good times gone?
Where the good times gone?
All the stupid fun
And all that shit we've done
Where the good times gone?
And you still don't know

Saw it on the silver screen
Preacher says
"Don't know what it means"
Last page ad
In a comic book
Bought me a map
Showed me where to look
It ain't carved of stone
Or made of wood
And if you paid for it
Then it's still no good
And you still won't know
What I'm looking for

Where the good times gone?
Where the good times gone?
All the stupid fun
And all that shit we've done
Where the good times gone?

I've always thought that this song was just Chad remembering those good times in his life, remembering back to a simpler time in life, a more innocent time in life. "Where the good times gone? All the stupid fun, And all that shit we done"

To me, this song is about remembering all the fun you had with your friends. Where did the times go?

it's about virginity. i used to think i was just being perverted about the first couple of lines, but i think i'm right. Look at the lyrics. and its about how you can't just go back to holding hands.

The best things in life are free... You can have so much fun without having to buy it. Remembering when you were younger and you didnt need to have money to have fun. You just made your own. Now that we have grown up and matured, its easy to see that now we cant get the fun of our youth back, no matter what we do or where we look.

There's a couple lines were I can see the meaning being about losing one's virginity...he talks about 'where it was lost' in quite a few...and then he mentions that paying for it doesn't count. But I think looking at the whole song, it really is about reminiscing about the good old days, and all the fun that was had back then. Now, it's more than likely that losing his virginity was a part of thost good old days....

i've always read this as being about love.. in the first verse he talks about the places he lost "it" (ie love) - in the chesterfield - maybe something happened with someone which caused a rift or whatever, gambling/diamonds - greed caused him to lose a sense of himself, and ultimatly his ability to love? "Saw it on the silver screen " not entirely sure about this one.. always thought of it as a movie screen.. like in the cinema or something. maybe films present us with this idealistic view of relationships and life etc Preacher says, "don't know what it means" - criticising religion and it's inability to explain what life and llove are really about "Last page ad in a comic book " - we've all seen those "adult phone lines" adverts in magazines.. if it really is about love then this line basically says that you won't find love there, only lust "It ain't carved of stone or made of wood " - people carve there loved ones initials in rocks and trees?? maybe that real love doesnt need to be declared like this "And if you paid for it, then it's still no good " ie paying for "love" (prostitutes?) isn;t the same, or in any way comparable thats just how i've always seen it.....

when they were recording this, the guitarist from big wreck, one of chads favorite bands was in town. they invited him to come up and play the slide on the song. "it is different from stuff we've done before, we've never really gone that bluesy and just to watch him lay down tracks... there must have been 15 people in the recording studio and we were all just sitting there with our jaws on the floor. everybody sat there stoned-faced staring at ian playing the slide and it was just breathtaking."

I think the meaning is pretty clear. This person got really burned in a previous relationship, and because of this is unable to love and show care in his present one, even though he so badly wants to. It's lovely song, and very sad. You can really feel how defeated and frustrated he is with himself.

Somewhere Only We Know
Keane
Per the FAQ on Keane's website, Keane's drummer Richard Hughes, stated the following: "We've been asked whether "Somewhere Only We Know" is about a specific place, and Tim has been saying that, for him, or us as individuals, it might be about a geographical space, or a feeling; it can mean something individual to each person, and they can interpret it to a memory of theirs... It's perhaps more of a theme rather than a specific message... Feelings that may be universal, without necessarily being totally specific to us, or a place, or a time..." With the nostalgic sentiment and the overall tone of the song, I think Keane is attempting to express a Portuguese term known as 'saudade', which does not have a direct English translation but roughly means "that which we remember because it is gone."

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.

@Kahiara Actually I think the husband passed away, "She sang for you last night She heard you were calling" Many people say they have felt, heard, or seen their loved ones after they have passed. "Don't be scared now Close your eyes She holds guard tonight Go on forward no remorse Life will take it's course" This is said to the late husband by a third part (never named), who encourages him to pass on. Because life will eventually continue. The phrase "holds guard" refers to the ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… ) which is a Christian ceremony held after someone dies. Now it is usually held right after the funeral, but in most celtiic countries the wake is held before the funeral. "She danced with you last night so you will remember All you have shared, a lifetime." This sentence feels as if the only thing it wants to convey is their history together, namely, husband and wife. For the rest it just refers back to the first verse.

I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. funny how you say the words domestic violence, abuse, abuse survivor and boom the subject changes. Anyways, I especially relate to her midnights becoming afternoons, complex PTSD often leads to this phenomenon, whether due to purposeful sleep deprivation by the abuser, or just hyper vigilance associated with the PTSD, along with the fear of facing people, especially your loved ones, who Never actually understand, even if they try, because all they see is you, on fire, screaming about the arsonist that no one ever sees, and who has been spreading lies about your alleged mental instability, deceptive personality, etc. the whole time. While the last thing survivors need is more blame, our society supports a narrative that blames the objectively innocent party because the blatantly guilty party has spent their entire lives fabricating a persona and we’re just being human, and human psychology is quite counterintuitive especially in the context of trauma. Look at Amber Heard. Vilified and not believed, regardless of what any abuse survivor could recognize as a fellow survivor instantly. But Johnny depp is a malignant narcissist, a man, and wealthy as all get out. It’s sick.
