I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, fundamental differing
Pure intention juxtaposed will set two lover's souls in motion
Disintegrating as it goes testing our communication

The light that fueled our fire then has burned a hole between us so
We cannot see to reach an end crippling our communication

I know the pieces fit 'cause I watched them tumble down
No fault, none to blame, it doesn't mean I don't desire
To point the finger, blame the other, watch the temple topple over
To bring the pieces back together, rediscover communication

The poetry that comes from the squaring off between
And the circling is worth it
Finding beauty in the dissonance

There was a time that the pieces fit, but I watched them fall away
Mildewed and smoldering, strangled by our coveting
I've done the math enough to know the dangers of our second guessing
Doomed to crumble unless we grow and strengthen our communication

(Cold, cold, cold) cold silence has
A tendency to
Atrophy any
Sense of compassion

Between supposed lovers
Between supposed lovers

I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit
I know the pieces fit

Here is my THEORY... of course the song has obvious religious undertones such as the separation of the church and some think of relationship issuea... However, I believe the song has alot to do with sacred geometry.

"The poetry that comes from the squaring off in between, and the circling is worth it, finding beauty in the dissonance."

When drawing an approximate logarithmic spiral, some use a method of using squares (squaring off) to draw the angles (circling). What I think they are saying is that they want us to discover the same wonders of the universe that they all have studied... the circling (studying) is worth it. Although we all grow and change, we remain the same, just like a fibonacci spiral. TOOL obviously has a passion for sacred geometry. This spiral seems to be a reoccuring theme throughout the entire lateralus album (mainly in the song lateralus; "Swing on the spiral"). The entire song (instrumentals and vocals) is set to a specific fibonacci sequence. Amazing. But wait, there is more.

Essentially, it is one huge puzzle for us all to solve, and I spend many nights doing my research LOL. When all of the lateralus songs are played in a specific fibonacci sequence all the songs fit together and flow perfectly. I wont tell you the numbers because that would ruin TOOLs objective; to make us think.

Suppossedly, (the following is only what I have heard, do not take this part too literal; however, it would not surprise me one single bit if it is absolutely true) if you put songs in fib. order, then, split triad down the middle and reverse the second half, then superimpose it onto the first half, then it plays beatufilly up until schism. This is when it all is suppossed to fall down, until the rift starts then it flows properly again. How fucking incredible is a perfectly symmetrical album. Effin genious all these ppl are.

    Just a thought :)

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
