I just downloaded this song and before hearing this, I'd never listened to anything by Placebo. Holy sweetness, Batman! I wanted to cry when I heard this song and my first thought was it's about drugs. Great song...I'm definitely going to listen to more Placebo. |

I read somewhere that Dolly Parton wrote this song. I don't know if she ever preformed it, though. Anyway, that's kinda funny, I think. Gorgeous song. Right now I have a deep appreciation for it because of a situation I happen to be in. It's definitely a song about feeling threatened.

"Stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice" seems to me to symbolize a wedding. Along Tbone732's idea, the girl became pregnant and committed suicide when they had plans to get married, so it stoped the baby's breath and a shoe full of rice. Baby's breath is a flower used a lot in flower arrangements and rice is thrown at the couple as they leave the church. I dunno, maybe I'm COMPLETELY wrong, which is most likely the case, but sounds ok to me. |

Dude, y'all don't understand! This has to be the coolest song on the whole fruckin' album. Seriously. Ok, put this album in your stereos or what have you and skip to this song, turn the volume up really really really really loudly and listen towards the end of this song. Maynard is whispering different lines from the songs on the album. The first line he whispers is "Unmistakable noise I was hearing..." which I think fits perfectly cause I'm sure not a lot of people realize what's going on at this part of the song. Your best bet would be to get headphones and a disc-man and turn the volume up the whole way, you can hear it best that way. Freakingly amazing. |

I think it's just forshadowing their breakup. I think at the beginning, he's thinking about how this relationship won't last. And "The mindless comfort grows when I'm alone with my 'great' plans" means he's thinking of what will happen after this relationship ends, but he knows it won't be good without her. And then the second part of the song is her breaking up with him. "'If I'm not happy now then when?'" means she's no longer happy with him and needs her space or whatever. But he's just thinking about how it all will end when it does. I dunno. I like your meaning, too, SiameseDream. |
