Four-fifty-one Lyrics

Here the man draws the line for separation.
(Old Vision).
Watch the man build up his walls for isolation.
(You make division).
Walk no mile,
I'm sick and tired,
of all the cowards at the radio station.
No cathartic plot to thicken,
to quote the vernacular,
I'd say that you're chicken.
chorus
We're going nowhere,
and it's happening fast,
a dim future,
and a darker past.
Somewhere away from here,
from past mistakes they often learn,
at Fahrenheit 451,
you close your doors and let it burn.
Pharisees in the church,
time to take a vacation.
(Emancipation).
Pharisees think the world comes to them for salvation.
(Booyah).
The radio is preaching the candy coated goo,
the record companies and the TV too.
No one rocks the boat,
terrified of trouble,
can't tamper with the walls of their sterile Christian bubble.
It was never your point to get people saved,
you pad yourself with fluff just because you're afraid.
I'm not afraid to point the finger now,
the choir's so used to the preaching anyhow.

This song appears to me to be about challenging the snobbier leaders in the church to get off their high horses and actually minister. Reese has a tendency to write songs that challenge those who are not living up to Christian standards. This song to me is just an example of his fearlessness to call out wrongs as he sees them.

i just found out that paper burns at 451 degrees farenheight. i think this song is about people just going by the rules in the old testament and not personally knowing God

This song really seems to be about poeple who dont want any excitement in the way they worship, who just go to church and sit. They dont want to accept change in their boring lives.

This song also follows the song "Farenheit" on the album, which is a clever nod to the movie "Farenheit 451", which was a movie about censorship and burning books.

That movie was first a book. So the song follows the BOOK.

It seems to be more about outreach. Everyone's "preaching the candy coated goo" and busy being all phariseeical about rules & regulations, and no-one's actually fulfilling Jesus' command to go out and make disciples of all nations.

"the choir's so used to the preaching anyhow" - go out, make a stand for the true, unchanging gospel of Jesus Christ! Get out of you "sterile Christian bubble" and dont just "close your doors and let [the world] burn"! The world is dying - do something about it today and share Jesus' love with someone who doesn't know.

I always took this song as a call to arms to the Christian music industry. To stop making songs exclusively for those that have been saved and to begin reaching out to the world. To quit worrying about profit and put your faith in Christ.
