Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Dreamed I was a fireman.
I just smoked and watched you burn.
Dreamed I was an astronaut.
I shot you down like a juggernaut.
Dreamed we were still going out.
Had that one a few times now.
Woke up to find we were not.
It's good to be awake.
Dreamed I was a tidal wave.
I ravaged your coast, there were no survivors.
Dreamed I was your landlord.
I showed your place when you had lovers.
If I was a vampire,
I wouldn't suck your blood.
Then I dreamed I was you.
Sweetest dream I have had.
If you could hear the dreams I've had, my dear,
They would give you nightmares for a week.
But you're not here and I can never sleep.
Come home so I can be a creep.
Dreamed I was a dream.
I stole you away in your sleep.
Saved you from a fire, a gun for hire,
I introduced you to a vampire.
A wave crashed on the beach.
We rolled around in its foamy grasp.
Kissing in the chaos of a kelpy sea.
Seems I couldn't save you from me.
Maybe I'm obsessive to think like this.
Probably not impressing you with my cheap tricks.
Honey, it's depressing
What depression does to some.
I'll play the part for hours
But I know you'll never come.
I just smoked and watched you burn.
Dreamed I was an astronaut.
I shot you down like a juggernaut.
Dreamed we were still going out.
Had that one a few times now.
Woke up to find we were not.
It's good to be awake.
Dreamed I was a tidal wave.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Punchline
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
wow, amazing, my fave jawbreaker song.......and i love them all
I think this song is about the constant struggle in ones mind. It sounds like he is stalking another person but its all in thier brain. A mix of choas and weird dreams all about someone who is no longer with this person. The last part of the song says like hey I you may think im psyco but so what.
this song rocks
I think this song really goes about a guy who wants to get rid of this girl.

But somewhere inside of him he knows he craves for this girl

And he realizes this and now he wants to be with her but he knows if he is with her, he will only break her because he cant control his depression. You can see this because he is saving her from all the disasters that he created in the first place.
dreamed i was a fireman...everytime i hear that first line i get shivers. idk. im odd.
how cool are they? [[in answer, VERY cool]] i like how he uses 'my dear'
The screechy sound on the guitar is awesome.
I love this song - my favourite by Jawbreaker, no contest. I think it's about a guy alternately pushing away and trying to draw in the object of his affection - who he feels he will destroy emotionally. What I've never decided is whether she comes back to him. I guess there are really no clues that she does in the song. He morosely says "I know you'll never come", but that could be just his pessimistic worldview... hmm.
How would it feel if you were the person who was just burning while he sat and smoked? I dream of sitting and smoking while I watch certain people burning, If I was a fireman....
cool song.
