Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.
Holy cow!
I think I've got one here
Now just what am I s'posed to do?
I've got a number of irrational fears
That I'd like to share with you
First: There's rules about old goats like me
Hangin' 'round with chicks like you
But I do like you
(And another one: you say "like" too much)
But I'm shakin' at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby, I'm afraid I'm falling for you
'n I'd do 'bout anything to get the hell out alive
Or maybe I would rather settle down with you
Holy moly!
Baby, wouldn't you know it?
Just as I was bustin' loose
I gotta go turn in my rock star card
And get fat and old with you
'Cause I'm a burning candle, you're a gentle moth
Teaching me to lick a little bit kinder
And I do like you - you're the lucky one
(No, I'm the lucky one...)
But I'm shakin' at your touch
I like you way too much
My baby, I'm afraid I'm falling for you
'n I'd do 'bout anything to get the hell out alive
Or maybe I would rather settle down with you
Holy sweet goddamn!
You left your cello in the basement
I admired the glowing stars
And tried to play a tune
I can't believe how bad I suck, it's true
What could you possibly see in little ol' 3-chord me?
But it's true, you like me
I like you too
I'm ready - let's do it, baby!

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Let's get sometihng straight, Weezer are NOT talented musicians. It's all just a bunch of power chords and confused vocal harminies. However, they are very good at the genre simply because Rivers is a strong songwriter.
ITs kinda true. They're simple but have good lyrics
Sorry, I know people on Songmeanings hate it when their 10 year old comments get commented on. But, seriously, you don't think they're talented, not one of them? All four of them (Matt Sharp at the time, not the lame excuse for a bassist, Scott Shriner) are great musicians.

First of all, if you are going by technicalities, go listen to jazz or prog rock or something really boring and soulless. They're not all just power chords that River's plays, he has a wide arsenal of chords, and he can rip on the guitar. As for Pinkerton, there are great dual guitar solos and great counter-melodies on nearly every song. The harmonies are not "confused", they're completely creative. No, the harmonies don't stay on the third, or the 5th for the whole harmony. The harmonies weave and intertwine, just perfectly enough to give it that distinct "weezer" sound. It's all about being original, and this album is definitely original. If you listen to The Blue Album Deluxe, you can hear the barber shop harmonies on My Evaline, or the Rock n Roll harmonies on Susanne. One thing weezer knows, is how to sing a tune. Everything on Pinkerton was intentional. Pat Wilson's drumming, at first could seem like a 10 year old learning how to play drums, then halfway thru the song, you keep listening and you hear all the little things he does, it's great. He has his own taste, keeps it simple, but there is not a song where he doesn't shine. I could clearly pick out Pat's drumming anywhere, I know this for a fact, because the first time i listened to the Rentals' first record, I said, wow that sounds a lot like weezer's drums; i was correct.

To comment to you directly, you are correct, Rivers is a strong songwriter. Songwriting is a part of musicianship, it is actually the biggest part of musicianship, if you can't write a good song, then you're forever a backing player. Also, another piece of info, Rivers was studying music at harvard when he was writing this album, so he does know quite a bit about music theory.

By the way, listen and try to pick out all of the chords to Across the Sea, even the key changes, then try to pick out all of the notes. It'll take you a little while. When Rivers calls himself "3-chord me", he's obviously being humble. Now if you look at current day weezer, and songs like beverly hills, yeah, now he's right about himself.
