Sometimes Lyrics

Sometimes sunshine
Does not want to shine on me
And sometimes I find myself blind
At first I cannot see and then I see it's me

I chose a road when I was young
In search of fun temptation won
And all my soul I did surrender
If I had a chance to go back now
Would I redeem my moral vows
Or would I repeat for my own laughter

Sometimes I hide somewhat
Like a bulb behind a shade
And sometimes I ask myself why
Is it 'cause the lights are too bright
Or because my eyes are closed too tight

Sometimes I find myself blind
Don't use my brain don't use my mind
Distorted feelings always leading my way
But I must forgive myself and let the past lay down to rest
And I'll be prepared to face myself in another day - hey

From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved
From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved

Sometimes sunshine
Does not want to shine on me
And sometimes, sometimes
I get lost, I get lost

I chose a road when I was young
In search of fun temptation won
And all my soul I did surrender
If I had a chance to go back now
Would I redeem my moral vows
Or would I repeat for my own laughter oh hey

From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved
From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved
From now on hey hey hey yeah
From now on oh hey hey
From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved

Sometimes I find myself blind
Don't use my brain don't use my mind
Distorted feelings always leading my way
But I must forgive myself and let the past lay down to rest
And I'll be prepared to face myself in another day - hey

From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved I mean it
From now on I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved woo
From now on - from now on
From now on yeah
Oooh ooh ooh
The back of my mind, the back of my mind, I'll be enslaved yeah
From now on hey yeah
From now on hoo I mean it I mean it
From now on I will behave I will behave
But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved

This song is definitely about mistakes that someone made when they were young, whether it's sex, drugs, or whatever. They regret living a selfish life of pleasure seeking, and now they want to change. But sometimes they still find themselves in that dark place where "sunshine does not want to shine on them" and in the back of their mind they still struggle with the desires that they feel enslaved to.

It's a beautiful song that I can really relate to. Tom was the lead songwriter on this one, right? I love those early No Doubt records.

I cannot believe only one person has commented so far!! This is such an awesome song!! The best off the CD!! The meaning though? Hrmm.....hard to explain. I think it means that sometimes in life there are bad times, and other times it's good. But in the end we need to except our mistakes and stop regretting them and letting them "enslave" us! This is soooo the story of my life song!!!!

do you guys think it's maybe about sex? like, if you look at it....especially here "I chose a road when I was young In search of fun temptation won And all my soul I did surrender If I had a chance to go back now Would I redeem my moral vows" like, maybe it's about regretting a first time? just a thought

I've always thought this song was about the cycle of thoughts from regrets and depression, from living life as normal but then hitting a low point when thinking about the past. Like, most of the time I'm fine and normal, but sometimes I think about things from the past, things I don't like. I start to wonder, have things really gotten better? Am I really a better person now? Have I really moved on from my past? "From now on I will behave But in the back of my mind I will be enslaved" Someone said it was about feeling enslaved to your own desires and vices even though you know they're bad and you want to change them. But I also think it's about that little nagging thought that you'll always be held back by these regrets, just a bit at least, no matter how much you've changed. In the back of your mind, you'll always know that's who you are and will spend the rest of your life pretending you're someone else but for no reward since you can't hide yourself from yourself.

I always interpreted it to be about addiction. Vowing to move on and behave but always being enslaved by it. And given the chance to go back knowing what you know now, would you take that same wayward path again? Having read other people's thoughts though, I agree it can relate to many other personal battles with past demons and regrets. I think this is my interpretation because addiction is my personal demon. Definitely my favourite song from the album by miles, so emotional the way it builds and then at the end returning to a simple acoustic guitar like the calm after the storm, a perfect metaphor for the song's meaning.
