This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
The waves keep on crashing on me for some reason
But your love keeps on coming like a thunder bolt
Well, come here a little closer
'Cause I wanna see you, baby, real close up
(Get over here, get over here)
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
The performance deserving of standing ovations
And who would have thought it'd be the two of us
(I don't know, I didn't think it was ever gonna happen)
So don't wake me if I'm dreamin'
'Cause I'm in the mood, come on and give it up
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
Ooh, yeah, yeah
Ooh, yeah, yeah
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
(Uh, uh, uh)
(Uh, uh, uh)
(Uh, uh, uh)
Keep on dancin'
Keep on dancin'
But your love keeps on coming like a thunder bolt
Well, come here a little closer
'Cause I wanna see you, baby, real close up
(Get over here, get over here)
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
The performance deserving of standing ovations
And who would have thought it'd be the two of us

So don't wake me if I'm dreamin'
'Cause I'm in the mood, come on and give it up
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
You got me feelin' hella good
So let's just keep on dancin'
You hold me like you should
So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
Ooh, yeah, yeah
Ooh, yeah, yeah

So I'm gonna keep on dancin' (keep on dancin')
(Uh, uh, uh)
(Uh, uh, uh)
(Uh, uh, uh)
Keep on dancin'
Keep on dancin'

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Midnight
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
i don't care what the lyrics are like, the beat is hella good... so i'll just keep on dancing... hahahha
I totally love this song!
my sex song babe!!
omigod ppl...freakin' get over it...ppl change, i like it when bands change and their cds don't all sound the same...and as for no doubt gaining fans, probably not, I'm like the only one I know who owns Rock Steady...and No Doubt has said before, even in '97, that they had many elements, not just ska...
You guys are insane. No Doubt didn't go pop or anything, if you really know No Doubt & all their albums, none of them sound the same. Their first album is completely like circus music with barely any deep meaning, but all together GREAT. They're second album was more true ska, & rock. Then Tragic Kingdom gave more deep meaning & a completely different sound. Return of Saturn was entirely different from the first three & obviously Rock Steady was more dance. They're just trying new stuff out with each album. You guys shouldn't say shit like that about No Doubt, they have tons of talent & who knows what their next album holds?! So just chill out, & listen to all their albums & appreciate the talent
I agree 100% with you- the music is never gurgitated, its always different. This song is just fun. A few of the posts I read seem so fixed on zero change. <I see old people>
I love this song! At first I didn't recongize her voice.

STOP HATING.. Just because this song isn't another one of those ska songs doesn't mean some of you people have to waste your lives writing how much you hate this one particular song. The madness...
