The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I saw the gap again today
While you were begging me to stay
Take care not to make me enter
If I do, we both may disappear
Know that I will choke until I swallow
Choke this infant here before me
What is this but my reflection?
Who am I to judge or strike you down?
But you're pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
You still love me, you still love me
But you didn't need to push it on me
You still love me, you still love me
But you didn't need to push it on me
Rest your trigger on my finger
Bang my head upon the fault line
You'd better take care not to make me enter
'Cause if I do, we both may disappear
But you're pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
You still love me, you still love me
But you didn't need to push it on me
You're pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
I'm slipping back into the gap again
I'm alive when you're touching me
Alive when you're shoving me down, yeah
But I'd trade it all for just a little peace of mind
Push it on me
Push it on me
Push it on me
Push it on me
You're pushing and shoving and scrambling
Keep my feet flat on the ground
I am somewhere I don't wanna be, yeah
Push me somewhere I don't wanna be
You put me somewhere I don't wanna be
Seeing someplace I don't wanna see
Never wanna see that place again
Saw that gap again today
While you were begging me to stay
Managed to push myself away
And you, as well, my dear
If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay
You minimize my movement anyway
I must persuade you another way
Pushing and shoving
Pushing and shoving, pushing me
There's no love in fear
Yeah, I'm staring down the hole again
Hands are on my back again
Survival is my only friend
Terrified of what may come, yeah
Remember I'll always love you
As I claw your fucking throat away
It will end no other way
It will end no other way
While you were begging me to stay
Take care not to make me enter
If I do, we both may disappear
Know that I will choke until I swallow
Choke this infant here before me
What is this but my reflection?
Who am I to judge or strike you down?
But you're pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
Pushing and shoving me
You still love me, you still love me

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.
I hate when people say Maynard is a god. This sounds so stupid coming from an actual Tool fan. He is a human being just like you or I. Of couse he IS in the greatest band in the world, and has gone through life experiences that make him a person the we can learn from. Although sometimes I wonder about Tool's true meaning. never-the-less, there is some value to be seen in Tool songs, but not so much that we should follow him blindly!
if you\'re not God, then who are you?
@joshthack Well put. The thing I like best about Tool is their sense of humor. They’ve got this habit of doing some real serious existential pondering……..then they make a recipe for some sort of baked goods (with hashish in them) sound like a Nazi rally, ominously yelling out “And no eggs!!!”. Add to that that “die eier” could mean “the eggs” but is also slang for “testicles”, making the song title “The balls of Satan”. I mean, if that isn’t subversive, absurdist humor I dunno what is.

I’ve heard the recipe is for something known as “Maynard’s magic cookies”, but that may just as easily be an inane internet rumor/urban legend.

Ah yes, the beauty and mystery of the comments section in a thread 21 years old, which no one will ever read……a little lonely patch of digital ground on a dusty server farm somewhere in a farmland of our own Midwest….and as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. And I begged, “Angel of the lord, what are these tortured screams?” And the angel said unto me, “These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day, and to them, it is the holocaust. And I sprang from my bed, drenched in sweat, like the tears of one thousand terrified brothers, and I roared, “Hear me now! I have seen the light! They have a life! They have a consciousness! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear classes! Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank ya Jesus.

See? Hilarious. And those little people out there? They were yours too…..
