In The Car Lyrics

She fed me strawberries
And freezer burned icecream
I said "Goodbye, I guess"
She lifted up her dress
And so I must confess
We made out one more time before I left for good
She thought I’d come back
But I wouldn’t want to seem like other guys

A book-and-record love
We sat and read our books
Between those longing looks
Compounded by our fear
My tongue inside her ear
My tongue inside her

In the basement
Of her mother’s house
Where we once
Taped the first three sides of "Sandinista!" for my car

We were looking for ourselves and found each other
In the car
It was rare than to do much more than
Simply mess around in the car
It was mostly mutual masturbation
Though we spoke, penetration I’d have to wait
For someone else to try it out

Once I had this dream
I slept with her mom
Unless I’ve got this wrong
A secret all along
Unless she hears this song
Unless she hears it
On a tape inside her inside her car
With her new husband
And she turns to him and says "I think that’s me"

In the car
We were looking for ourselves
But found each other
In the car
We grouped excuses
Not to be alone anymore
In the car
We were waiting for our lives
To start their endings

In the car
We were never making love
We were never making love
We were never making love

Just a note, "Sandinista" is the name of a three record
set released January 1981 by The Clash.

Well Barenaked Ladies are exactly known for freaky songs and more for more humorous upbeat tunes along with a good mixture of serious-ness at the same time. I think this song is about two people who were having more of a first experience sort of thing, not taking anything really all that serious and the part that says "We were never making love" may rather refer to the actual meaning of love, basically saying it was never about emotions but lust.

I agree with most of what was said. What impresses me about this song--even though it talks about intensely private, pretty embarrassing stuff (could you imagine singing this song in front of your mother), it has such an authentic feel to it. Like most of their love songs, you feel like you're spying on a real relationship instead of listening to a love song. Probably why it somehow comes across as darkly sexy.

No, she didn't die. She just turned to her new husband and said, "I think that's me." :-P

@Archaia Sophia This line is unforgettably brilliant... a wonderfully meta moment.

this song is about his first sexual experience. akward, bumbling, "mostly mutual masterbation." this girl sounds like a friend of his that he fooled around with and never talked to after that. he didnt love her, but he'll always remember her cause she was his first. bnl has a bunch of freaky songs like this.

haha i just love this song because it is so authentic! who hasn't had a ridiculously awkward relationship???? two young inexerienced "lovers". "it was mostly mutual masterbation" about sums up this song. and i would bet my life this song is true, and i bet the girl in the song almost died when she heard this for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just thought i'd throw this in there...i love The Clash reference when he says he taped the first 3 sides of "Sandinista!" for his car...

I know!! When I listened to this song for the first time, and was like "WTF? Did they just say Sandinista!?" Though I don't get why you would only tape the first three sides; you miss out on a lot of good songs that way. :P

The song is clearly about a girl in high school who he didn't have feelings for ("we were never making love") but fooled around with. They were just exploring themselves with each other ("penetration... had to wait for someone else", "mostly mutual masturbation", When he first tried to end it, all it took was her lifting up her dress for him to give in to his urges and fool around with her one more time before he never spoke to her again.

But the clear best part of the song is him admitting he had a dream about sleeping with her mom, something that NO ONE knows about ("a secret all along"), until he realizes that she will now know about it when she hears this song playing in the car now that she's married (such a meta moment)... "I think that's me".

hey, this song was mentioned on radio free roscoe...i wanna hear it!

The first time? Nah, I don't think she was his, 'first.' It was someone he seriously messed around with, nothing more. I don't think they went all the way because:

"Though we spoke of penatration, I'd have to wait for someone else to try it out"

and

"We were never making love"

Yeah, BNL is all about freaky songs, but that's what I like about 'em! And I had no idea it was mentioned on radio free roscoe?! I love that show

"We grouped excuses Not to be alone anymore"

isnt it "we groped for excuses"

i think its about him and a girl basically using each other 2 explore sex for the 1st time, not necessarily full sex but just being naively curious.

"we were looking for ourselves but found each other"

maybe the 'experimenting' led to a genuine interest as a person? but for some reason they couldnt do anything about it
