Pinch Me Lyrics

It's the perfect time of year
Somewhere far away from here
I feel fine enough, I guess
Considering everything's a mess
There's a restaurant down the street
Where hungry people like to eat
I could walk but I'll just drive
It's colder than it looks outside
It's like a dream you try to remember
But it's gone
Then you try to scream
But it only comes out as a yawn
When you try to see the world
Beyond your front door
Take your time, is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to try to figure out what all this is for
It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away
Put the sprinkler on the lawn
And run through with my gym shorts on
Take a drink right from the hose
And change into some drier clothes
Climb the stairs up to my room
Sleep away the afternoon
Like a dream you try to remember
But it's gone
Then you try to scream
But it only comes out as a yawn
When you try to see the world
Beyond your front door
Take your time is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to try to figure out what all this is for
Pinch me, pinch me, cause I'm still asleep
Please God tell me that I'm still asleep
On an evening such as this
It's hard to tell if I exist
If I pack the car and leave this town
Who'll notice that I'm not around
I could hide out under there
I just made you say "underwear"
I could leave but I'll just stay
All my stuff's here anyway
Like a dream you try to remember
But it's gone
Then you try to scream
But it only comes out as a yawn
When you try to see the world
Beyond your front door
Take your time is the way I rhyme gonna make you smile
When you realize that a guy my size might take a while
Just to try to figure out what all this is for
Pinch me
Try to figure out what all this is for
Pinch me
Try to see the world beyond your front door
Pinch me
Try to figure out what all this is for

people don't like this song over other bnl songs because of the "simple lyrics" (There’s a restaurant down the street / Where hungry people like to eat). Have you ever been driving, get lost in thought, then suddenly be at your destination and not remember the drive? ever have a whole day like that? a week? a month of just autopiolet, get up do this, think "oh that's nice" but not feel it, not feel good or bad, not feel at all, just ovserve things, make mental notes, then go to sleep? i have. it is horrible. i think that's what the songs about. the lyrics are meant to be simple. in the verses, he's in this slump of mental numbness, then escapes in the choruses to say "please, tell me this isn't life. tell me this is a dream, please for the love of God tell me this isn't real!" but you try to scream and it only comes out as a yawn

I swear, these guys could write a song about committing suicide and it would still put everyone in a good mood.

I agree with the idea that it's about depression. This is by far my favorite BNL song. Even though the lyrics and meaning are sad, and even though I agree/think almost everything said in this song, this song still never fails to put me in a good mood. So kudos, BNL.

I love the lines;

"I feel fine enough I guess, Considering everything's a mess." & "I could leave but I'll just stay, All my stuff's here anyway."

Amazing. :]

@jacklyn07 They did... several. But most notably "War on Drugs"... on this album... which was a huge fan favorite\r\n

This song is about someone said but they can't understand why. They just go through life on autopilot. My favorite line is "it's like a dream you try to remember but it's gone" because you're trying to grasp happiness again, but you can't seem to remember how. Great song.

"you try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn"

that's the best line of the song

"Pinch Me" was, I think, the last song to be written for the record. I wrote it up on the third floor of my house, just feeling a bit melancholy; sometimes you look around, and things are great, and you just kind of feel down, and there's no reason for you to — you have an inability to appreciate your surroundings sometimes. That's what I was trying to get at, some of the boredom of pristine suburbia and the potential lying under every yawn.

I had a basic framework in mind, but couldn't finish it off, really. It was a hard one to write, because of the sort of quick singing/rapping; I was so scared people were gonna go, "Oh, it's like 'One Week,'" which it isn't. But I was so paranoid people would think that that I almost didn't write it. ---Ed Robertson

Stalefish has it right, this song is all about apathy, and the boring trivialities of suburban life. All the mundane events that occur, which you can't esape from, especially in the last verse ("On an evening such as this/It’s hard to tell if I exist").

This song is about depression, or so they say in their Greatest Hits CD. The lyrics are explaining the type of depression where you don't want to do anything but sit around and wonder about your life. Ha, but I like the whole "I'll just go and crack some jokes and play some humor" attitude. That's totally me when I am down.

just got back from seeing the Ladies in concert. This is the most upbeat song about chronic depression i've ever heard. Ladies really know how to entertain and have fun--hell they are one fun one band

Put the sprinkler on the lawn/ And run through with no clothing on/ Take a drink right from the hose/ And change into my sister's clothes/

This is why I only listen to my fave band when I'm crying my eyes out... Because the most depressing lyrics are set to the happiest music.

i think this song is about a guy trying to just figure out his life.

"when you try to see the world beyond your front door"

I love this part...reminds me of the semester I spent abroad and was experiencing different ways of thinking. I got to do a lot of growing.
