Torn Lyrics

peace is what they tell me
love am i unholy
lies are what they tell me
despise you that control me
the peace is dead in my soul
i have blamed the reasons for my intentions poor
yes im the only one
who would carry on this far
torn, im filthy
born in my own misery
stole all that you gave me
control you claim you save me
the peace is dead in my soul
i have blamed the reason for my
intentions poor
yes im the one who
the only one who
would carry on this far

Funny how long ago these comments were! It's also odd that nobody simply read the explanation that the band itself gave, where guitarist Tremonti said it was auto biographical, and was about the stress and angst he felt while being lost between the ages of 18-23 working two jobs trying to get through school. Man can I identify with that. Those are some of the most challenging years for young men - to transition from boy to man. The world is handing you a sh*t sandwich while saying "hope you enjoyed your childhood and gained some skills because you are on your own good luck" and you have to figure out how to overcome it and kick some ass alone. This is far and away my favorite Creed song. It is so powerful and honest and the music matches the lyrics perfectly. I used to think the lyrics was "the BEAST is dead" which I kind of liked, but "peace is dead" makes more sense. It's like, the world coddles and protects you as a child (hopefully) but insulates you so much that it doesn't really prepare you to be thrown to the wolves of real society - working life, and mature relationships, where you stand on your own and have to battle with all you have just to stay sane and make a living. The lies are where parents and society tells you their quaint little ideas about how the world works and the roadmap like "get an education, get a job, find a wife" and yet - you can't even quiet your own mind, you can't overcome the assholes at work, and you slowly realize that the tools everyone (including you) thought you had - those tools are not sufficient. You must learn to construct your OWN tools along the way. You must learn how to build tools STARTING at age 18, and that is the only way to have a shot at sanity, and possibly success. Tool # 1 in my opinion: learn how to calm your mind and focus on what truly matters. I think it's love, but the great thing is, it's up to you to decide what truly matters to YOU.

I think this has alot to do with Government control or maybe societies influence and control over what we do. Like when he says "peace is what they tell me love am i unholy lies are what they tell me " I think he's talking about how we're told we should be something because it's right but on the inside we have this inner voice that tells us that we should be something unique. If you try to listen to that voice and be different, society as a whole seems to try and destroy you(mentally at least). Most of us just give up after some time and we conform but he won't so he has to live a torn, painful life..............Or maybe I'm looking too far into it, you decide.

Awesome song, too bad gay songs like "One Last Breath" and "My Sacrifice" get much more attention then this song.

I think it means that he felt betrayed by his religion (lies are what they tell me). I remember watching Behind the Music and he did drugs and admitted this to the colledge he was going to and they kicked him out. He had been told that if you are honest you will be forgiven, but he wasn't and he felt that everything that he had been told about religion was a lie.
