December Flower Lyrics
(Verse 1)
Towards the rich archaic heavens; towards the black diorama
you are the artist and the texture
that plays with the mantle of the earth
When the bleakest of powders
lie rooted to the starched stones
and the roots that feed the peaking trees
embrace the sleeping stones
(Chorus)
Archaic pearls of sleep and death
the voice of December losing its breath
and the floweryard of white and grey is haunted (is haunted)
White as the down of a flaking snow,
heroic emblems of life
(Verse 2)
Green is the colour of my death
as in winter-guise I swoop towards the ground
Green is the landscape of my sorrow filled passing
(Chorus)
(Verse 3)
We are In Flames
towards the dead archaic heavens
We are the artist and the texture
that alters the mantle of the earth
(Chorus)
you are the artist and the texture
that plays with the mantle of the earth
lie rooted to the starched stones
and the roots that feed the peaking trees
embrace the sleeping stones
the voice of December losing its breath
and the floweryard of white and grey is haunted (is haunted)
heroic emblems of life
as in winter-guise I swoop towards the ground
Green is the landscape of my sorrow filled passing
towards the dead archaic heavens
We are the artist and the texture
that alters the mantle of the earth

i get chills every time i hear the solo in this song. my life is better with In Flames in it
Anyone know what this song is about? I think it's about nature or something.
I agree that this song is about the beauty and power of nature. I also believe that it speaks of living beings transition back to the Earth and nature when they die, thus in the last verse In Flames referring to us as the "mantle and the texture of the earth"; meaning that when we die and decompose back into the earth, we now form part of its structure.
The first verse is speaking from a living point of view (i.e. "YOU are the artist of the texture") and slowly transgresses to speaking about oneself (replacing YOU with WE) Theres quite a few lyrics in this song which may undermine my point of view regarding the meaning of this song, but I think in general I'm pretty close to understanding what its about..
Regardless of what it's about, this one of the most kickass metal songs of all time.
I Believe this song is about the nature of the Earth, and cycle of life...Refering to us as a very important part of this cycle. The lead in this song is incredible...In flames kicks ass...
I analyized this song a few years back in my grade 11 english class. Basically everything I concluded has already been stated. Circle of life is seen through the roots, trees and mantle. The song focuses more on death however, which is apparent in the title. One section that just baffles me is, "White as the down of flaking snow, the heroic emblems of life." If I ever figure out what that means then my life will be complete. The concept that you and the earth are made up of the same substance is what I enjoy most... aside from the guitar solo which I find pleasing as well.
well i have a different explanation for the first verse. i view it as ore about perseverance through a struggle. he is addressing the flower and saying it is the artist and the texture... etc. "when the roots that feed the peaking trees embrace the sleeping stone" refers to when the roots stop growing because the ground is cold and hard like stone. the floweryard is haunted by the lingering flower that wont die out, thus making it a "heroic emblem of life" (and also white from the snowfall) perhaps green is the clor of his death because the flower...

Just Saw InFlames live for the first time last night ... i dont know if i've ever seen men so majestic in my life ... They were like Kings.. i was right in front .. i wish you all could have seen them.
Regarding Drav's post ... i remember Grade 11 english .. we were taught that white represented purity. Heriosm and emblems may have something to do with virtues and moral codes. if you tie this in with the concept of 'purity' then one may conclude that this verse may stress the importance of living a 'moral' or 'heroic' life in the service and aid of others.
Maybe the character in the song regrets not having lived this way as he dies since the song hints at mortality.
Furthermore if you consider the 'flaking snow' .. snow flakes are short lived but memorible .. possibly similar to many kind deeds which are preformed daily.
Jesus Murphy you have it Biplos! The floweryard of white and grey is most likely refering to a graveyard. I still don't understand what "ancient pearls of sleep and death / the voice of december losing its breath" means. They are associating December, or basically winter with death; hence, "December Flower."
Later he says, "green is the colour of my death," meaning that once he's decomposed, as stated above, he will now be the soil which feed the plants. Just as the roots feed us, we soon feed the roots. I bet you never realized how old the particles that make up your body really are. Anywho, I was at the same concert I believe, it was on the 4th of September.
Regardless of what this song means, it's a fucking great piece of metal.
