Heriosm and emblems may have something to do with virtues and moral codes. if you tie this in with the concept of 'purity' then one may conclude that this verse may stress the importance of living a 'moral' or 'heroic' life in the service and aid of others.
Maybe the character in the song regrets not having lived this way as he dies since the song hints at mortality.
