And it's Silver RAINBOW...not box...anyway, this song is pretty cool, so eighties-ish. It's about how you know your in love b/c you ignore e'thing else. And if you're watching the time ..."if you're walking home beside her and you know what time it is and if you avoid the puddles in your way you haven't been there either"...then you're not in true love, but concerned w/outside things.
A zipper??? Sorry, but I've always seen it the way LeArtist does. When you ignore the rest of life's intrusions (a bear comes in the room) because you are so into your loved one..then you know that you are there. While I understand a zipper resembling a silver rainbow, and "coming and going", the rest of the lyrics wouldn't make much sense. Either way, the driving pulse of this song makes it memerable.
The silver rainbow is a zip? Never thought of that one before but I quite like it! Must admit I always thought the song was about sex so I'm glad I'm not the only one. The silver rainbow, be it a zip or not, is the dividing line between the awkward will we/won't we moment and let's get it on.

Is teenagers SEX, adventure and discovery. Sure with all the pleasures and dangers. I remember back on the 80's when I first heard this song (the whole CD). I knew it was about sex and the bear was her father. What I never figured out was that the silver rainbow was the zipper!!.

Could be about sex with someone the first time...with the zipper being the 'silver rainbow' and the pot of gold being....well, you know. Not knowing if one is coming or going could just be the thrill from sex, especially when it's with someone (he hopefully likes) for the first time. Interesting song. Never knew what it meant, but I was also never a Genesis fan.
I don't know why people "beat around the bush" on the meaning of this song. It's about loosing your virginity.
I believe this song as being about sex & more specifically the big O. So many lines,are about it, " And you keep on going 'cause you're unaware Then you know that you are there," and "If you're sitting there beside her With your arms you hold her close, And you're wondering just how far she'll let you go." It might be about both men & women having an O, because of the lines, "you haven't been there either," and "you won't know if you're coming or going." The silver rainbow 'might' be the zipper, but I always heard something different. Not trying to gross anyone out, but the way I always understood it when I was a sex crazed teenage boy 30 years ago, was that the silver rainbow referred to a man's ... seed. Anyone else ever hear it that way.

This song is about an open zipper / fly on pants... pay very close attention to the lyrics.
sounds like a combination. maybe if your avoiding puddles or wondering how far she'll let you go you haven't gone past the zipper. on the other hand if you dont notice...aparently you've gone past the zipper (aka the silver rainbow to some). Or maybe youre about to.
