These times I find no words to say
A crime I once committed filled me
Too much of heaven's eyes I saw through
Only when meanings have no reason
They're taken beyond your sense of right
He pays pennance to the air above him
White circles, black lines surround me
Reborn, so plain my eyes see
This is the reason that I came here
To be so near to such a person

Someone feels guilty for the sinns ha have made. He feels sorry for his friends who doesn't realise what he is doing wrong.
He visits a church, confesses in the stand (white cirkles, black lines). Feels relieved after. "The Him" is God, and he feels secure, perhaps, when he awaits his death.
I like this song. Simple but still emotionall.

I have little idea what this song is really about, if anything. One thing I know for sure is that this song was made for days of heavy rain with no wind.

This is a really dark song. You can almost feel the despair. Just been to Alfred Street, Lower broughton. Grim

I fucking love this song.

This is crystal clear. The song was written less than a year after Ian Curtis died. It's not about God, it's not about death in general or Church or anything like that. The 'Him' is clearly Ian Curtis. The most convincing (and poignant) lyrics are
'This is the reason that I came here To be so near to such a person'
God's not a person (nor a 'Him' or a Her). The reason that he 'came here', i.e. into the music and art business, was to be in the presence of a person as transcendent as Ian Curtis.
That's it. It's beautiful and moving and to me, obvious.
