Narrative of Soul Against Soul Lyrics
To the wounded:
I have seen the self image
they've forced you to reduce to shattered glass,
with the only remaining value lying in it's jagged edges.
But the few who warrant waking for await their recognition.
No fear of death but with fear of life,
your weakness kills everyone.
So live.
Angels for everyone.
For no lack of searching I can't seem to find one.
Angels in everyone.
What of all their promises?
Can't seem to find much more than lies.
Angels in anyone.
A permanent solution to a temporary problem.
Before I'd lay me down to rest,
I'd throw away everything to live.

with the only remaining value lying in it's jagged edges.

This definitely speaks an anti-suicide message.
The first verse is saying how he sees the hurt that has been caused to someone, how they've been "broken" like shattered glass, and only finding comfort in the edges of the glass (probably referring to cutting). They've been battered so hard that they're not afraid of dying, but afraid of living another day. But their weakness will in turn not only hurt themselves, but everyone around them in their life.
In the chorus, Davey is saying there's an angel for everyone, which I'm interpreting as there's someone out there to help you through the struggle, while Jade is saying that he's never found one, and that he's been lied to by his "angels" too many times, while Davey says there's someone for everyone.
The second verse is self-explanatory. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. He would rather lose everything and still live, rather than take his own life.
Narrative of Soul Against Soul, the title, is referring to a story between two people, one who's been broken down and battered, wanting to take his/her life, and the other saying that it isn't worth it, and telling them there's someone out there to help them live through it.
I think that this song is about suicide and that it really isn't the way out of your problems. You shouldn't let otheres or bad times drag you down. You have it within yourself to get through, and even if you may not see it, there are people out here who care about you. Just like the last line says, you need to do all that is within your power to go on with your life before giving up:
"Before I'd lay me down to rest, I'd throw away everything to live."
yup.
Mm hmm... Sounds reasonable. And right now I can't think of a different meaning for it (though I might come up with one later). If I come up with a different meaning, I'll be sure to post it.
Luv ya! Sox
this song helped me out when i thought of just ending it. i listen to this song everytime i feel like im going to go out of my santiy. It's too damn beautiful for words....it goes much deeper then that.
I love Jade's back up voacal during the chorus of this song, they are so awesome. I think the suicide idea makes sense, "A permanent solution to a temporary problem." Awesome song, AFI is awesome.
This is, to me, in part saying that religion's dying, because he says angels for everyone, then angels in everyone, then angels in anyone. It's also like he's saying that he fears life, but he's willing to live it to the end, and when the end comes, he'd throw away everything to live again.
Jade`s backing vocals are always great. Even since before he was a full member of the band.
"To The Wounded:"
