Water Lyrics

What's all this talk of a notion?
I'd rather drink from the ocean
What did you mean when you said no?
I only want what is best for you

I won't ever let you drown
No I won't ever let you down

Cause I am my enemy
The water's up to the knee
I never wanted anything from you,
Yes I do, yes I do
My engine's running on dry,
My head's so fucked up inside
Shut up, I know
I said so...

There is no way to recover
You told me there is no other
The surface is getting hotter
I'll shove your head under water

But I won't ever let you drown
No I won't ever let you down

Cause I am my enemy
The water's up to the knee
I never wanted anything from you,
Yes I do, yes I do
My engine's running on dry,
My head's so fucked up inside
Shut up, I know
I said so...

Drink!

Cause I am my enemy
The water's up to the knee
I never wanted anything from you,
Yes I do, yes I do
My engine's running on dry,
My head's so fucked up inside
Shut up, I know
I said so...

Shut up, I know
I said so...

I really think that this is lyrics to a conversation between God and Ben about Ben's drinking problem.

The start is God talking to Ben:

"I only want what is best for you, I won't ever let you drown, No I won't ever let you down."

Then the chorus is Ben's feelings about his problem and how he doesn't feel he has any control over his drinking problem:

"Cause I am my enemy The water's up to the knee I never wanted anything from you, Yes I do, yes I do My engine's running on dry, My head's so fucked up inside Shut up, I know I said so..."

Also, the line:

"I shove your head underwater"

Could be a reference to baptism, where God is trying to bring Ben back.

Anyways, awesome song to lift weights to. BB!

My Interpretation

This is one of my favorite BB songs, and I see where you get that meaning. I actually think this is a great interpretation!

I personally think that this is a "love" letter to an ex, describing how his love for her (him?) will never falter and he will be there for her, hence the "I won't ever let you drown". But it also must have been toxic, (see "I'll shove your head underwater." Bloody good song though!

This is one of my favorite BB songs. To me the song is a metaphor about a bad relationship. She is using him, seeing someone else."you told me there was no other" He is constantly being hurt and knows the best thing to do is move on,but somehow gets pulled back in. The reference to "I am my own enemy". He knows he is adding to the pain by staying. He wants to end it "shove your head under water" ,but always caves in " I wont ever let you drown,no I wont ever let you down". My take anyway.

This story seems to be more of a personal one inside a person's head. He is in some serious crap and refuses to acknowledge to someone else that he needs help although in his head he knows he does. This could also be between two people. One person basically says he will always protect that person when he can't even help himself. So many ways this could go to be honest.

I interpret it as a song about a girl who let him. She cheated on him and he’s hurt by it, but he inserts himself in her life and won’t let her go. “I won’t ever let you down” means he’s there to stay for the long run. He knows he needs help and is fucked up inside his head. He loves her and can’t help it.

What's all this talk of a notion? (I think she gave her opinion about him) I'd rather drink from the ocean What did you mean when you said no? (she rejected him in some way) I only want what is best for you (He only wants her to be happy) Well I won't ever let you drown (He feels like he wouldn’t let her down like other guys) No I won't ever let you down (reassuring her)

'Cause I am my enemy (The relationship is toxic and he knows he shouldn’t go there) The water's up to the knee (He feels like it’s almost too much) I never wanted nothin' from you (He never wanted anything from her, just her love) Yes I do, yes I do (I think he wanted to mary her though) My engine's runnin' on dry (He doesn’t know how much he can keep trying to get her) My head's so fucked up inside (He knows he has a problem)

Shut up (He wants her to drop it because he already knows he’s messed up and needs help) I know I said so (She doesn’t have to remind him because he admitted it first)

There is no way to recover (He is deeply hurt by her actions) You told me there is no other (She told him he was the only one for her or lead him to believe that) The surface is getting hotter (He’s getting angry) Well I'll shove your head under water (Physically hurt her) But I won't ever let you drown (but he wouldn’t hurt her because he’s still in love) No, I won't ever let you down (He wouldn’t disappoint if she let him in)

chorus… see above

Shut up I know I said so

Shut up I know I said so

Shut up 'Cause I know I said so (He’s verbally fighting her and can’t take the words she’s saying)

Well I did this by ear, so these lyrics might be just a little off... they should be close.

And check this band out if you've never heard them, they're pretty damn good.

This song is awesome. Blew me away thats for sure. Did you know : two of the band members were originally in LIFER a signed band, and quit to join BREAKING BENJAMIN because they thought it was so good. I think they made the right choice because in my opinion LIFER sucks and BB kicks ass!
