Placing the music video aside, I think this song is about a girl and a guy. He wants to know what’s going to happen next between them; “Show me what’s left”. She went through many phases; going out with him, leaving him, becoming angry (beautiful anger), breaking that pattern, empty and perfect, shattered and worthless, and then things got better. He became “Sober and silent” “Faded” like he didn’t matter to her and “violent” angry because of it. He wants her to save a space inside of her heart for him and not let him go. “We’ll make it through” is him saying they can pull through and be together if she tries. “Bring the broken back to life” I think means bring the relationship back to how it was. He wants to fix it. She’s been through several phases and he’s sober now. He won’t ever let life bring him down again and he wants her to “never surrender” never stop fighting her demons too. At the same time, he doesn’t want her to give up on their love or friendship or bond that they once had. It’s okay for her and him to recover but he’s saying after rising from the ashes, don’t forget about everything they were. He wants to be held on to. I interpret it as a guy who has fell in love with someone who is a beautiful almost angelic person inside. Because she’s such a good person, he knows she’ll be in heaven when she dies. He loves her so much that he wants to be with her in life and after death. He might not feel like a good enough person for heaven, so he’ll sleep close to heaven to be near her. It’s a faithless lie because it might not be possible to do that. He wants to keep their love together as long as he can. Pain come alive, I try to breathe, shade my eyes Follow the damned, I have lost the way again (I think he’s saying he’s fallen into his darkness again. That darkness is sin. It causes him pain and makes him feel like he can’t breathe. Their lyrics can be interpreted in all kinds of scenarios. I saw this as a man who goes on a power trip and his victim is his ex-girlfriend. He wants her crawling and on her knees. When he’s attacking her he says feed the hate and start the lies. I pictured her saying she always loved him, not to kill her, and that she never meant to hurt him sort of thing. He yells control! And I pictured him trying not to kill her, but she’s all bloody and lying to him about how much she cared. I keep falling out of line (I think he keeps slipping up from what’s right and what’s considered wrong) I was drained and left behind (He gave a lot of himself to her, even doing what was wrong to keep her satisfied but it was all for nothing. The lyrics are vague and this song can be interpreted in many different ways. I interpret it as a guy who was wicked, vile, and found some light. The problem is, the girl he loved left him because of the darkness in him. He says he’s chasing the righteous and becoming a part of her. I think he feels more connected to her in his new found light. He realized that he wasted his years with fake people and their fake plastic life. She’s real and he respects that. Okay here’s where it gets weird. He scared the girl away that he loved with his wickedness. When he says “diabolic fear” I think that’s the fear he made her feel. Maybe she felt like he’d hurt her or do something evil to her. He doesn’t feel at fault, but knows some of the fault to a degree does fall on him. Hope drains people and so does hate, but I think he’s saying she can hate him as much as she wants but he doesn’t care. He also won’t let his hope of getting her back drain him. It’s his “waking dream”. He yells “Run” near the end of the song. I think he’s afraid to hurt her again and is confused between his light and the darkness he knew. This is obviously a song about a relationship that literally tortures him. Everyone's interpretation will vary. He was in a relationship with someone who made him feel like no one else did or could. She’s moved on, but he doesn’t want her to, because he can't. He’s not content with being in her past or being the other guy or a one night stand (or whatever he is now to her). He wants it all, meaning he wants to be the only one and wants her full undivided attention and love. There were a lot of lies in the relationship and a lot of pain. He wants her to let all that go and start over new. He won’t let her go and will always be there for her. When he says chemicals collide, I think she gave herself to him for a night. He repeats that he doesn’t want enough, but that he wants it all. He wants more with her than what’s she’s willing to give . It’s a very cute and tragic song. He loves her, but I almost think she’s too wild to be tamed, almost like a free spirt. ”Set the earth on fire” Those kind of people do whatever they want with whoever they want and are extremely hard to “capture”. He wants her to commit and maybe settle down with him, but she’s not having it. Throughout the song he tells her he feels hollow, cold, and shallow. At the end of the song, he says he’s come undone. I think this is a song about a guy who was loyal to a girl who he considered a friend but they ended up more than that. He let her go “Cut her line” and let her test the waters basically. So she could explore and learn. He will be there for her if she needs him. “Bring me your enemies Lay them before me and walk away” means that he will hurt anyone who tries to hurt her and all she has to do is let him know who. He gets hurt because she finds someone else. “And I don’t know why so I choke and smile” He doesn’t get why she moved on. Maybe while testing the waters she found a greater love, but he doesn’t get it because he was willing to kill anyone who hurt her. You can’t get more hardcore than that. He finds out that in the end, she’s just like him. She was promiscuous I would say. He might have been too but he was loyal. She moved on from him… so she wasn’t as loyal as he thought. I think he let her go knowing they’d keep hooking back up whenever she was around or whenever he was in town sort of thing. She cuts him out completely and he says “fuck you firefly”. His “Smile!” at the end means he has to pretend his girl being with someone else doesn’t bother him. You my friend (He cares about someone that he considers a friend. This song can be interpreted many ways. I think it’s about “Jane”. He loves her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. She makes him feel that much in love with her that he begs her to let him stay caught in her way. The relationship with Jane is, and I always believed, forbidden in a way for whatever reason. He wants her to fall in love with him too. It's a crime you let it happen to me (He’s saying it’s basically criminal that she made him fall in love) Never mind, I'll let it happen to you (He’s wants to make her fall in love with him) Out of mind, forget it there's nothing to lose (He has nothing to lose) But my mind and all the things I wanted (Except his sanity and the way he wanted it to be between them) Every time I get it throw it away (Every time she gives him the chance to get together, he throws away the opportunity. Probably because he’s scared about the way she makes him feel) It's a sign, I get it, I wanna stay (Ok this is tricky but if you read into the lyrics he’s referring to Jane’s diary. There are many ways to interpret the song. I chose the relationship route because that’s what I got from the song when I first listened to it. I try not to place in the fact that he’s struggled with alcoholism. I think he might have loved Jane very much but she moved on and he doesn’t care that she did. He’s broken and feels like it’s hopeless but he also decides he’s going to keep trying. When you’re in love, you try to force your way back in to someone’s life because you know it’s right and it could be beautiful if they only opened their heart up to you. I think from many of the songs about Jane, we can get the feeling that Jane is a very broken and a cold person. I think he wants to help her. Hopeless- Here I lie forever (He’s stuck on thoughts of his ex) Sorrow still remains (He’s still hurting) Will the water pull me down and wash it all away (Will time make it better?) He's referring to "Her diary" remember is the song "The Diary of Jane" her words were very cryptic. I think the lyricist is still trying to find what Jane was feeling and referencing. Who were the people in her pages and why couldn't he find his place? I think he's asking for a sign or asking to find some insight. "Tears ready to fall might be something she wrote in her diary. I don't know my mind is weird, but I think he's still fixating on Jane. |

| He's in a twisted relationship with a woman. She colors his skin and the colors don't blend means she leaves him feeling abused. He says he's going to get her and that there's no place like home. He says no place like home with anger. He wants her to come back home. She obviously left. When he says he's going to get her, he means sexually and physically back. "I've got a southern belle too with ruby red shoes" He's describing how he has another woman now. "Are you sick of it all?" he asks her if she's sick of it because he wants to make her mad and is wondering if she's jealous. He wants her jealous. Revenge is something he's after. When he said "too" this means she also has someone else. "There's a man made of tin with an oil can grin" This is him in the metaphor. He is hollow. The grin is symbolic for his evil intensions. He wants to do her harm. "Can you let me go down? To the end of the road. Can I stand by your side? We can make it alright." He's basically saying he wants to be with her forever. He knows they can make it if she lets him. Then another arrived. "It's a cowardly lion." This is referring back to her new boyfriend. The lyricist thinks he's a coward. He then basically says what he wanted from this world was resolution and for her to wait for him instead of running off with other men. He says he knows she not fair and that he doesn't get it. He doesn't understand why she left him when he loved her and probably did a lot of things for her. He's unhappy in his new relationship and refers to his girlfriend as "straw" pretty much mindless. It's a song about revenge, jealousy, and love. He wants her to take him back. | |

I think my mind is more sinister than most. My interpretation, but his lyrics are vague, so they really could mean anything. To me it seems like a dialogue between a rapist and what he thinks his victim is saying. I think he was infatuated with a girl who was extremely hard to get with. He already knew there was something wrong with her. He probably stalked her. He sees her empty but she sees him as empty too. He gives into the lust and temptation and rapes her. She doesn’t fight him off or scream, and he warns her that she needs to because she’ll end up dead if she doesn’t try to get away. He has mixed feelings about her and the evil deed because a part of him wants her to give herself completely to him. He wants to own her. Someone else mentioned dominance and I get that vibe out of this too. She’s very submissive, but probably because of an abusive past or something fucked up that happened to her. He wants to find the fire in her eyes… meaning he wants to make her feel loved and he wants it back in return. At the end of the song he claims he’s waiting, meaning he gets nothing out of her. He screams “Start hating” this is because she’s too submissive for him and he wanted it to be more of a struggle. She was too easy because she didn’t care. If she fought him, he might not have went through with it. His feeling for her leaves him angry. Also in the song he says Jane four times right before the “I’m waiting” part. So I think this song is about “Jane”. Jane is probably like a Jane Doe. Someone he doesn’t want us to know about and someone who doesn’t want to be known either? Here’s what I got out of it; Reminds me of 50 shades of Grey for some reason. Jane’s part- I see nothing in your eyes (She’s telling him she sees him empty) And the more I see the less I like (She doesn’t like the way he is seemingly heartless) Is it over yet, (She’s asking him if he’s done) in my head? She doesn’t fight and the fact that he has to tell her to do what’s only natural means he does care about her, but he’s still going through with the deed because he can’t help himself.) So he probably would cut her throat open) This will be all over soon (He sings this and then whispers it. The whisper is like a rapist or murderer letting the victim know it won’t take long) Pour salt into the open wound (He’s hurt her and he’s aware of it) Jane- Is it over yet? (Again in his mind she’s asking this while he’s doing it) The male- Let me in (He’s asking her to let him be a part of her heart.
