In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I wish I could tie you up in my shoes
Make you feel unpretty too
I was told I was beautiful
But what does that mean to you?
Look into the mirror who's inside there
The one with the long hair
Same old me again today, yeah
My outsides look cool
My insides are blue
Every time I think I'm through
It's because of you
I've tried different ways
But it's all the same
At the end of the day
I have myself to blame
I'm just trippin'
You can buy your hair if it won't grow
You can fix your nose if he says so
You can buy all the make-up that MAC can make
But if you can't look inside you
Find out who am I to
Be in the position to make me feel so
Damn unpretty
Yeah, I'll make you feel unpretty too
Never insecure until I met you
Now I'm bein' stupid
I used to be so cute to me
Just a little bit skinny
Why do I look to all these things
To keep you happy?
Maybe get rid of you and then I'll get back to me (hey)
My outsides look cool
My insides are blue
Every time I think I'm through
It's because of you
I've tried different ways
But it's all the same
At the end of the day
I have myself to blame
Can't believe I'm trippin', yeah
You can buy your hair if it won't grow
You can fix your nose if he says so
You can buy all the make-up that MAC can make
But if you can't look inside you
Find out who am I to
Be in the position to make me feel so

Oh-whoa, oh-oh-whoa

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
this song is definitely a good one. it's about the girl who doesn't think she's pretty and the guy she's with [or was with, whatever one] makes her feel like she's not pretty at all. and the part where she sings "Never insecure until I met you", well that makes a whole lot of sense. she's saying that before this guy, she didn't care what she looked like, and that she always did think she had the perfect body figure, and that she was so pretty and all of that, but now being with him, she realizes that she's not any of the above. but she feels like she has to be perfect to be with this guy, and of course she thinks she's not perfect.
very beautiful and meaningful song. i'd have to say at least 48% of the teeenage girls in america feel this way sometimes.
Just 48%? Women/girls are held to a different standard than men/boys. It means more if a man is educated and successful. It means little if a woman is; however, she had better be gorgeous (or at least thin) if she expects to have it easy. It's not only Hollywood and the print media perpetuating the double standard; it's men who need someone physically beautiful to make them feel like men. They are as much a part of the problem as the media; however, the bottom line resides with the female herself. It's her choice to feel good (or bad) about herself. There are plenty of quality males who were raised well by women (and men) who taught them what is truly important. In the end, we all grow old; lose our hair; gain weight; turn gray; and talk about our bowels and the weather:) As for the song, the lyrics are obvious. It's a good song...
