Shattered Faith Lyrics

The scientist purported that there ain't no purpose
and the theologian told me that it's all been designed
and I'm trying to maintain objectivity

The world won't illuminate what really matters
and I'm an imperfect moral meaning extractor
processing the complexity

Born of the Earth (Are we blind?)
We weren't given a choice (There's no way)
What about free will? (What we have)
Do we have a voice? (Is shattered faith)
See them run in place (Here and now)
in the human rat race (No reward)
So much dead weight (No debate) to our disgrace (Accept your fate)
Life begins when you accept your fate

Paralysis from forces raging out of control until
my confidence and will are at an all-time low
Just directionless wandering

Eternal life, eternal truth, eternal secrets
Isolated hopes and hypotheses just
Leave me feeling so hungry

Born of the Earth (Are we blind?)
We weren't given a choice (There's no way)
What about free will? (What we have)
Do we have a voice? (Is shattered faith)
See them run in place (Here and now)
in the human rat race (No reward)
So much dead weight (No debate) to our disgrace (Accept your fate)
Life begins when you accept your fate

Right or wrong,
the main criterion is what you do and not what you say
The roads you take,
the friends you make and those you throw away

The method is a simple synthesis of the past and present state
You never lose if the path you choose is one you can easily navigate

I had a dream, light and carefree
But now there's doubt and gravity

But I won't run in place (Are we blind?) in the human rat race (There's no way)
I can set the pace (What we have) and accept my fate (Is shattered faith)
Shattered faith (Here and now)
Shattered faith (No reward)
the part of me (No debate) I can't erase (Accept your fate)

This song is about the one thing that we haven't chosen for ourselves... life. The one thing our free will has no control over is that very thing which gives us our free will, which would be our deliverance (or birth). This resulted from the free will of others. When you accept your fate -- that you have been placed on this earth -- you can begin to live and attempt to truly make a difference as opposed to living to no beneficial ends as many do in the human rat race for capital goods and power.

Most of BRs songs actually aren't really anti-religion. Rather, they're pro-thinking for yourself and about taking action for causes you believe in. I can also see the faith angle in this song, though. Maybe thats why it didn't make process of belief.

Favorite Bad Religion song.

I think that he's talking the never ending debate of free will versus determinism. This song comes off as pro-determinism, meaning that we're not exactly in control of our lives. Free will might be the "shattered faith" Greg is talking about.

WinkledPhole has the right idea. I believe it is about whether or not our lives are planned out.

By the way it did get on the Process of Belief album, only not in the US version.

I agree with what you just said, but I think alternatively, in a more literal sense, the song could be more about losing faith, finding out that everything you have belived or worked for in your life may have no meaning and it's just something you have to accept because nothing is ever for sure. And there is nothing you can do to go back and change how you have lead your life.

I agree with virtk0s, but I think it has a double meaning, I know that you probably won't like another BR song interpreted as anti-religion but, it is called Shattered FAITH.

I think that BR is trying to tell us that there is no god and there is no legitimate reason to believe in a god.

But I won't run in place (Are we blind?) in the human rat race (There's no way) I can set the pace (What we have) and accept my fate (Is shattered faith) Shattered faith (Here and now) Shattered faith (No reward)

I think the above lyrics are BR looking down pitifully on all the people who make religion such a huge part of their lives, and they're wasting their time, effort, and money on something that doesn't even exist.

Eternal life, eternal truth, eternal secrets Isolated hopes and hypotheses just Leave me feeling so hungry

I think in those lyrics BR is saying that churches and theists try to sell you all this shit about eternal life and all of the mysteries and all the things that religion supposedly explains, and it leaves them feeling so hungry for the truth instead of the garbage that they're fed by theologians.

I had a dream, light and carefree But now there's doubt and gravity

I think that this bit says that they once believed in god, maybe when they were really young or something, but they sort of drifted from it because it does not make sense, "but now there's doubt and gravity." I think that also says that it's so much easier to live life believing in god and having the security of living forever, instead of having to understand that you'll simply cease to exist when you die, or whatever the case may be. Life is much easier when god is looking out for you.

Shattered faith.
