La Complainte de la Butte Lyrics

La lune trop blme
Pose un diadme
Sur tes cheveux roux
La lune trop rousse
De gloire clabousse
Ton jupon plein trous
La lune trop ple
Caresse l'opale
De tes yeux blass
Princesse de la rue
Soit la bienvenue
Dans mon coeur bless
les escarliers de la butte
Sont durs aux misreux
Les ailes des moulins
Protgent les amoureux

Petite mandigotte
Je sens ta menotte
Qui cherche ma main
Je sens ta poitrine
Et ta taille fine
J'oublie mon chagrin
Je sens sur tes lvres
Une odeur de fivre
De gosse mal nourrie
Et sous ta caresse
Je sens une ivresse
Qui m'anantit
les escaliers de la butte
Sont durs aux misreux
Les ailes des moulins
Protgent les amoureux
Mais voil qu'il flotte
La lune qu'il flotte
La princesse aussi
La la la la la La la la la la
Mon rve vanoui
Les escaliers de la butte
Sont durs aux misreux
Les ailes des moulins
Protgent les amoureux

Beautiful, beautifully sung song. Rufus' training in opera obviously came in handy for this piece and definitely shines through. I'm not sure if he is fluent in French or not but his pronounciation is wonderful. Even if you can't understand the words it's a great song to just listen to.

Well Rufus is Canadian French Canadian maybe :) I know one part the "Sont durs aux miséreux Les ailes des moulins Protègent les amoureux" in english is "Can make the wretched sigh While windmill wings Of the moulin Shelter you and I"

English Translation: The moon all too fair in your russet-red hair sits a sparkling crown The moon all too red with glory, is spread on your poor, tattered gown The moon, all too white, caresses the light in your world-weary eyes Princess of the street, do allow me to greet you, my broken heart cries

Chorus: The stairways up to la butte Can make the wreched sigh While windmill wings of the moulin shelter you and I

I feel, beggar-girl, your feathers, they curl as they seek out my wrists I feel your young breasts, your thin little waist I lose my regrets I taste on your mouth the feverish breath of a half-starving waif And with your caress I sense drunkenness erasing my life

Chorus: The stairways up to la butte Can make the wreched sigh While windmill wings of the moulin shelter you and I

And see how she skips, the moon how she drifts, The princess in tow Da da da da da da da da da da My reveries grow The steps of Montmartre, all uphill, are hardest on the poor The sails of the windmill, like wings, shelter all paramours

Absolutely amazing. I've been looking for accurate lyrics for a while. Thank you.

Question for Ruben: Are the French Lyrics accurate? It seems as if the singer is singer different words from time to time, than is printed. Thanks, ~Resonnant

Simply beautiful song. I wish it was played longer and louder in Moulin Rouge. It was so fitting, too.
