Together in Electric Dreams Lyrics
I only knew you for a while
I never saw your smile til it was time to go
Time to go away (time to go away)
Sometimes it's hard to recognise
Love comes as a surprise and it's too late
It's just too late to stay, too late to stay
We'll always be together, however far it seems
(Love never ends)
We'll always be together, together in electric dreams
Because the friendship that you gave
Has taught me to be brave
No matter where I go
I'll never find a better prize (find a better prize)
Thought you're miles and miles away
I see you everyday
I don't have to try, I just close my eyes
I close my eyes...
We'll always be together, however far it seems
(Love never ends)
We'll always be together, together in electric dreams
We'll always be together, however far it seems
(Love never ends)
We'll always be together, together in electric dreams
We'll always be together, however far it seems
(Love never ends)

Well my daughter came up with an interesting interpretation that it is about a father who had to leave while his child was very young and now cant see their child.
"I only knew you for awhile I never saw your smile" As with babies dont smile for a few months.
It strikes a chord with me being that it reflects what happened with my daughter until she decided she wanted to live with me after being reunited after 6 years of not seeing me. The expressions in the song are very much like the love you have for your children and the pain involved in seperation.
cheesy but ultimately satisfying. this is one of my halliesongs. anyways, that's what i think...
great song cheesy movie
We'll always be together, together in electric dreams...
I think this song is about two people who are in love keeping in contact with each other through e-mail cause in the music video they have this really old 70s computer and hence the phrase "electric dreams".
But most of the lyrics otherwise don't really reference anything to that, so it could also just be about someone who is in love but the person is far away but he says they are still together, because she has influenced his life and taught him to be stronger and he still thinks or dreams about her, so he is in effect still in a relationship with her.
@matrixcreator Although electronic "mail" was technically possible when this came out, email as a recognised form of communication for the public was still a decade or so away.

The song was not originally done by Human League (who have never actually recorded a version of it), but by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder. The song was made for the soundtrack to the movie Electric Dreams which was about a geeky bloke who buys a computer system (back before pc's were in every household) and the computer becomes sentient. The relationsip between them starts out okay, the computer is like a child, always learning. But when it gets jealous of the mans relationship with the musician who lives upstairs things get ugly quickly. Eventually the computer uploads itself to the internet and roams the world. Just before the credits, it takes over a radio station and dedicates this song to the guy as a good bye.
I thought HL recorded a version for their 1989(ish) Greatest Hits collection? No?
Anyway, it's about a stalker who follows this woman around obsessively.
The lines....i never saw your smile.....(coz she would always look worried/cross when she saw him)....
.....till it was time to go, time to go away.....(when he got arrested and put in prison....at which point she grinned like a fat kid locked in a cake shop)
It's true. Phil told me.
The plot of the movie is quite clear: The computer (which became self aware) that Miles bought for his research/work is broadcasting this song after taking over the radiostations to tell him (Miles) and the rest of the world that it (computer) has come to terms with Miles' relationship with Madeline, which it is now accepting. The lyrics tell of the time they (computer and Miles) had together and how it was in those days. Because the computer is "on air" from then on or "living" in the digital world which we now call internet, it is still present in Miles' life and will always be. Naturally we could shift focus of the whole text to Miles singing to his sentient computer with the same melancholy, but that was not really what happened in the movie. Lovely song, memories from those days and still fitting in our modern time. To be honest, that is all we are searching for in a song and maybe our own meaning is what counts in the end.
